Default IT Contractor in NV - do I charge sales tax?

Hi all and sorry if this is in the wrong forum,

I have just started legally working in Nevada as a IT consultant, mostly working from home. It is time for my first invoice and I have a couple of issues.

Firstly: In the UK I was VAT registered and so charged 15% VAT on my services. Do I have to charge any form of sales tax here?

Secondly: What is a fair mileage charge for site visits? $0.55/mile?

Many thanks to all,

Jay

That's the standard federal rate you can claim as an expense on your tax returns.

No idea about the sales tax though.

You need to Google to find if Nevada has a sales tax for services. If you want a guess, I'd say no. But I ain't Googled it.

Generally most states do not charge sales tax for services, but you should check NV rules. If they do, then you get into one hellish collection, reporting and payment situation which is not really fun.

Below is an extract taken from this website. Although I aren't sure if it answers your question. It's about three quarters down the page.

http://tax.state.nv.us/faq.htm#sales

I am starting a consulting business in Nevada. Is this subject to Sales Tax?

In Nevada, Sales/Use Tax is imposed on the sale, transfer, lease, rental, use, or other consumption of tangible personal property for consideration. Services do not fall under the definition of tangible personal property and are not subject to Sales Tax. The provider of the services has a Use Tax liability on the materials used/consumed in providing the service. Nevada Revised Statute 372.085, 372.105, and 372.185
