Well.... some of it went on, we just didn't hear about it. Nevertheless, we've been becoming a less tolerant and more vindictive society in general with respect to the death penalty, which I suppose one could argue is a final form of torture.

It's like living in a continually unfolding Chamber of Horrors here just now.

Only 30 you think? Ooh. I'd say a lot longer than that.

Problem is: who's is checking on the US that they do not torture prisoners, eh?

Yeah, the rest of the world is now listening and stating that torture is justified in extraordinary cases.

Yepper, and I don't think that they will change much while they're in power.
Here's a nice story for you:

Hmmmmm - and look at the ad to the right "Patriotic Song Collection" - it's not difficult to work out who conducted that poll. I'll bet a poll could be taken to prove the exact opposite.

The more I read, the more horrified I become! I used to think the Japanese held top place for cruelty and inhumanity in war, now I'm changing my mind. :scared:

Erm..... I don't think we're that bad, or as bad as Germany in WWII, but we are certainly worse than the ideals that emerged post WWII.

And again I add that this sort of torture, excepting culture-specifics like Koran-flushing, has been going on in America's prisons unchecked for decades. If it's good enough to use at home against one's own citizens, then why fuss about using it overseas?

Perhaps not as bad, but considering the world has moved on 60 years, SOME lessons ought to have been learned.

It's OK - I'm in my cyclic Anti-American mode just now - the Moon must be full!

Well I guess for arguements sake, the prisons are full of people who have been proven guilty, while those being tortured now have probably not even seen a lawyer yet.

Sixty years on, I consider it a shame if we even have to debate whether torture is allowable.

Even if they are guilty, there is a constitutional prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment, which I would assume rules out torture.

Presumably torture is used to get someone to admit guilt or to collude with the government to catch other criminals. Seems like if you can justify it in one situation, you could in another, but a tortured coerced confession would be thrown out in US criminal court.
