I might also be going mental, of course.

Also it was quite novel arriving before you left as the time difference was five hours but the flight time was only three hours.

Eastbound Trans Pacific flights arrive before leaving -- after flying through the night.

But then, that is a factor of the Dateline, not speed.

I always did think it was kind of neat to spend a day and a half going to Bangkok, but only half a day coming back.

I found it strange leaving L.A. at noon and landing just about sunset -- the next day.

[BTW, this was usually L.A.-Seoul]. [One trip to HoChihMin City via Taipei left LA at Midnight -- that was totally discombobulating].

I've never flown on one... But there was one on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle that we walked in and around...

One is dumped at Filton. Been there years, the runway has since been removed. You can see it on google street view from here:

SCG (Save Concorde Group) attempted to raise the funds to have it removed from Filton beforehand. They failed.

I was working in Lewisham the day they retired them, we all went out onto the roof and watched them fly over on their way to LHR.

I flew on the French one. From Doncaster to Paris - Charles de Gaulle would you believe.

Still have all the stuff you got. Leather pouch, postcard of Concorde. Don't know why I kept it.

I'm a big guy and didn't find it too cramped. No more so than flying first class in the nose of a BA 747 which is my prefered mode of transatlantic travel these days.

I made the trip in Fed 2003. A terrific experience; I made a wee website to remember the experience by:

There is an excellent branch of the Imperial War Museum for aircraft at Duxford (adjacent to the M11 motorway between Stansted airport and the city of Cambridge). We used to take our children when they were little.

They have one of the prototypes of Concorde and you can go inside it.

There is also the American Air Museum at Duxford:

It's a great day out if you are visiting the Cambridge area

I used to be stationed at Brize Norton worked very close to the runway. When it was in development Concorde would come in constantly doing circuits and bumps. It was an amazing site. I'm still not sure if a Vulcan wasn't noisier though!

I lived just outside of Hounslow (which is basically next to Heathrow) in London when I was at Uni. Had the privilege of having Concorde go over our student flat twice a day. It would make the dishes in the kitchen rattle as it went over. If I was outside I would always watch it land, it reminded me of a bird more than a plane, it descended wheels first rather than nose first like other planes.

Was quite nice to watch though.

Oh and apparently because of it, we also didn't have mobile phone reception on campus because it had some sort of landing beacon on one of the building roofs, so you could only get reception on the bog in a particular corner building :/

IIRC you went to Brunel too didn't you?

Planes rarely descend nose first (I think they used to approach nose first at the old HK airport), and they certainly don't land nose first. One tried that at NY La Guardia earlier this year, if I remember correctly, and it did not end well (the nose wheel collapsed).

I think that might be more a description of Concorde's higher angle of attack on landing, making other planes seem to land nose first by comparison when, of course, there is at least 3-5 degrees of nose-up pitch in the flare.

Re: Concorde

I remember seeing an Air France Concorde carrying the French President leaving Muscat. I was working with some Dutch blokes at the time, and I remember one of them saying " Look at that flash bastard go! He must have left his oven on..." Not quite sure what he meant, but it stuck with me. That was in 1992, and I remember also the bloody racket it made! Loud but lovely!

They've been converting them into conference halls and flats for years though, so when it's finished, I'll believe it.

Security is pretty slack, friends when bunny hoping a while back and only saw one chap.

Shame it never got sold to Royal Holloway. Don't know how they got around the need to keep it in educational uses charter jobby though.

He flew on it once. He is 6'3". It was fast but small. However he sat next to Kate Moss so he was delighted by the experience. He kept the branded pen and writing paper they gave him!

That's funny :goodpost:

I once landed at Heathrow (before the days of the air bridge!) and had to wait to cross the tarmac once disembarked, because Concorde was taking off. I fair felt the ground tremble beneath my feet! Loved that aircraft - would have loved a trip on it, I'm only 5ft 5ins JerseyGirl, I think it would have been more comfortable for me. My husband is 6ft 5ins... he struggles with regular commercial craft!

Ha ha. I'm not an aviation nut, but it's a momento of my 16 years at the airport. So not for sale I'm afraid. Make an offer to NewJerseyGirl's husband :fingerscrossed:

My husband won't let his Concorde memorabilia go either...he keeps them with the signed, personalized doodles Paul McCartney gave to him. He thinks they will be valuable some day. :D
