Compulsory Medicals for Kids
Grrrrrr - my son has just handed me an envelope with the info for signing up for his school's soccer team.
Not only does he have to report for compulsory training a fortnight before the academic year starts (regardless of whether or not he makes the team - although he's the goalie) so we have to return from our home-leave trip to England earlier, but they have to have a full medical before they're allowed to join the team each year.
I've just phoned the doctor's surgery to make an appointment but 'there are no appointments this week and we're not doing any medicals during July.'
The earliest date I can get him in to see the doctor is August 22nd.
I don't ever remember my kids having to have full medicals for school each year, until we moved here.
More money I suppose for the insurance companies.....

There's always a court case and a slimy lawyer behind every inspection and disclaimer in the good ole US of A.

Actually, I'm pleased that medicals are insisted upon (either by your own doctor of the school's doctor which is free). too many children have physical problems that go undiagnosed, especially heart conditions and when playing sports that creates a life-threatening issue. I'm sure there would be plenty of parents who would sue quite happily for the non-insistance of medicals before their children played sports and something happened.
Also, early catching of such diseases as diabetes prevents long term damage to a child's eyes, feet etc.
If you don't want the insurance companies to get the money, opt for the school doctor to do the medical. You are entitled to this (although it may only be available for children under 16).

My son has had to have a medical each year so he can take part in after school sports. This year I managed to arrange for him to see the school doctor during school time, but being a 13 yr old he completely forgot about it and now I have to pay to have a private one done.
Last year my son came home and told me had to have a cup for soccer. I thought he meant a water bottle or something until I realised he meant a jock strap and box . I have never known soccer players to wear a box but bought him one anyway. Unlike shinpads there was no way the ref could check whether they wore one or not so none of the lads ever wore them.

All part of the American phsyche that death is optional and if you get ill its your fault for not going to the doctor to get it detected early. As the sign in the shop near us says: "Give your loved one the gift of early detection. Buy them a full body scan gift card now".
We dont wear them in Britain as a rule (well some of the prima donna premier players might but not us rufty tuffty sunday leaguers) and we also dont cover ourselves in a 2 inch layer of teflon and foam rubber to play rugby either.

My son's school requires a medical every year - sports or no sports. And then of course you need one for the after school program and one for the summer camp etc etc.

Ah, then they've reduced the requirements since I was a lad- AND NEVER MIND HOW LONG AGO THAT WAS!
I seem to recall having to take physicals about every other week. School physicals, team physicals, summer camp physicals.... I was giving so many blood samples I was afraid I was going to run out. :scared:

When I questioned our GP about my daughter having the MMR jab (I was a little worried about her having the combined injection V's individual shots) anyhow I was basically told she either has it or she can't attend school. ya held to ransom whatever way you look at it.

If you haven't already received your letter regarding the requirements when the kids finished school, they should send it to you in the post I have found that this depends on the age of the children but for your school district they may send them all in the post.
Also, sorry if this sounds obvious (but the way you have worded your posting makes me question on whether you know or not) but only one physical is needed. Your doctor will fill out the forms for all the other camps/clubs etc., from the same physical. It has taken me a long time to remember to get all the forms together at once and bring them with me when the kids go. I often forget and then have to go back and drop them off, then arrange for them to be picked up!

Bloody physicals!! On the Friday evening before my daughters Sunday afternoon departure for summer camp I realised she needed a physical. Believe me, I felt physically sick at the major blunder and thought she would end up missing the camp.
Luckily we found on the internet an urgent medical care clinic which was open on Saturdays and did physicals. We were outside the office at 8 am that morning and had to pay $25 just for a nurse to take a look at her and sign the camp form

I was furious to discover that our health insurance co. will only fork out for physicals every other year for kids over the age of 13. This means several hundred dollars in the intervening years, and they need them to play sports.
