Commute nightmares
I am preparing to exchange my 5.5 mile 12 minute commute for a 25 mile (one way) 35-40 minute commute. I am sure mine is far from the worst.
What are you all facing? Probably best not answer this while on the interstate

Re: Commute nightmares
With gas prices as they are, my short commute (3 miles, ~10 minutes) is about all I want to do. One or two days a week my commute is actually 0 miles and 1 minute, not counting the time it takes to hook up the laptop.

You're kidding, right? With gas prices less than $3.50 in Houston? I do 45 miles a day so I bought a car that gets 28 mpg. This is compared to about $9 a gal in the UK, right?

Re: Commute nightmares
A couple of years ago I traded my 20 mile trip to downtown that could take anywhere from 35 minutes to 2.5 hours for a 3 mile, 5 minute one. Happy days! There's construction on the street the office is on right now so that adds a few more minutes but I can't really complain too much.

Re: Commute nightmares
About 20 miles each way for me.
20 - 25 minutes without traffic, which I manage to avoid most days.
Anything up to an hour if I get the timing wrong though.

Re: Commute nightmares
My commuter car used to get 32-34 mpg, though increased ethanol appears to be responsible for knocking that back to 29-31mpg. The other mitigating factor is that for most of that time (the first few months, for two years after little Miss P was born, and the last 10 months since little Miss P started school) I Mrs P has commuted with me, so there was zero marginal cost for her commute.

Re: Commute nightmares
The cost of gas to commute is infinity times the cost of telecommuting. I seem to have a lot more money in my pocket since they allowed international teams (boss in Edmonton, co-workers in Aberdeen, Calgary, Shanghai, and Chennai) to telecommute.

Re: Commute nightmares
Dh does 55 miles, it's split pretty evenly between country roads and freeway, takes in about 1h 20min so long as there isn't a pile up.

The distance or time it takes you to travel to work and back on a regular basis (on your own or with others in a car pool or public transportation, or some combination).
Oooooh. You don't HAVE one. Irony, I gets it.

Re: Commute nightmares
I may have to swap cars with my wife. Mine gets about 17.5mpg and hers more like 35-40mpg...
Normally takes me 25 mins or so in the morning (I go in early to miss traffic) and about 45 in the afternoon. If I left at peak times it would be about 1hr15 each way...
Way better than my London commute though which was 1hr40 mins each way on train and tube...

Re: Commute nightmares
My commute can take anywhere from 12-14 minutes, each way(!) depending on traffic.
Horrific, I tell you. I'm not even going to mention the carnage should a school bus get thrown into the mix.

However, he got a new job in downtown Seattle and while it's still a very long commute, he can now take the train (no driving, he gets to read, work, whatever) and his company pays for it!!
