Commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day?

Is your employer and/or your city/town commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day that falls on January 17th?

Both my employer and the city in which I live do observe this holiday.

I just wondered if and how the holiday is observed in other parts of the US...

Well there's no school here that day, as for anything going on to do with it like a parade or something, have no clue....

I think the base here makes a bigger deal out of it than our actual city. But I'm not really up to date on base issues anymore :D

It's a federal holiday....so all across the USA schools will be closed, banks will be closed, the mail won't run, and government officials get to take a(nother) day off~ ;)

(I'm not sure if all employers have to give employees a paid holiday or not though)

A few years ago James Earl Jones' ( voice of Darth Vader ) home town decided to commerate him on MLK day. On the big day they announced a tribute to James Earl Ray, the man who was convicted of killing MLK. DOH !!!!!!!!!!!

I have the day off as the company I work at observes the holiday, however, the company I actually work for does not.

My wife went to the same high school as James Earl Jones.
so I wouldn't put it past them.

hubby doesnt have the day off ...but then thats because the government he works for doesnt observe all federal holidays. I on the other other hand have the day off because the hotel is still friken empty, skiiers have all buggered off to Colorado or similar so we're closed.

The patent office will be closed ... I might visit the Lincoln Memorial and stand on those steps and listen to a replay of that great inspiring speech "I believe ..." Dr. Martin Luther King was a great visionary. Inspirational, a vessel for hope and change.

*LOL* ... the patent office is a federal outfit so gets every federal holiday, and how much they deserve that holiday ... they work their government butts off big time (seriously), many Patent Examiners quit through work stress, its a difficult job.
