Columbus, Georgia

Does anyone happen to know what this town and the surrounding areas (that are within commuting distance) are like i.e. for bringing up children, cost of living, quality of life, property prices etc etc?

I worked in Columbus, and lived on the AL side of the border for about 4 years. It is a decent town, large Military base, Ft. Benning right by it, lots of industry- Cessna Aircraft, A large KIA Plant is being built 20 miles noth, it is the world headquarters of AFLAC insurance, TSYS credit card payent center etc. A large number of military retirees has softened the 'red neck' factor...though they still exist race relations are not bad.
Cost of living is reletive I suppose to where you are now I suppose; decent (decent IMO) houses start in the 150's and up...
We enjoyed our time there.
