College Age Kid Wants to Study Online in UK

I’m a UK citizen living full time is the US since 2005. I have 3 kids, the oldest of which is finishing High School. His first year of college will be online, which in theory he can do anywhere.

He wants to go stay in England with family. He was born in UK and I assume like me has dual citizenship.

What are the pros and cons of doing this? Can he stay beyond 3 months (assume that’s the max for regular visitors). What about work? Can he potentially get a part time job? What about doctor visits? Driving? Can he be set up for a period up to 1 year. It all sounds a bit messy unless he’s being looked after by family entirely.

What documents will hw need to travel? He has a US passport but does not yet have a UK one.

Appreciate any help!

He needs to enter the UK with a UK passport in order to do any of the things you are contemplating.

Where was he born? If you are a British citizen, other than by descent, then your children are British. To live in the UK he needs a British passport. As soon as he arrives in the UK with the intent on staying, he will be an UK resident. This means he will be entitled to all the services and he can stay as long as he wishes. To be eligible for home fees uni students must be resident in the UK for the 3 years prior to entering uni. This may vary depending on the uni in question. Best to contact the unis he is interested in and ask about home/international fees.

Edit: if you wish to enquire about obtaining a UK passport, please open a thread in our UK Immigration forum...

Something else to check up on: if he's living in the UK for a year, he may become liable to pay college tuition at international rates instead of in-state rates. That could be a lot more expensive.

Yes. He can drive on a US license for up to 12 months from the date of entry into the UK, and no requirement to get a UK provisional or any sort of international permit in that time.
Regardless of the fact that he is also a British Citizen, if he leaves and later comes back, it resets for another 12 months period.

Others have/will answer the rest.
