A few more modern suggestions:
Made in Dagenham - brilliantly acted piece.
Pirate Radio
Love Actually
Still Crazy
Hot Fuzz
and probably the most depressing film I have seen in years - All or Nothing.

I have to say that I hate Billy Elliott with a passion. (I do like Brassed Off and The Full Monty) It is a nasty class biased piece of vitriol. It presents the working class characters as bigoted idiots with no appreciation of anything cultural, and while there are people like that, this film casts a whole world of them as one big stereotype. The one odd fish amongst them finds his redemption via a middle class pursuit. I felt the message of the movie was how wonderful it was that the 'middle class' boy born to a working class family was able to escape to the life that he really deserved. While this and Kes have different themes, I think there is room for some comparison and that doing so helps show this movie for its limited ambitions and its acceptance of easy stereotypes.

Agree about the first four - haven't seen the other two - and you're right about Maid in Dagenham. We liked Calendar Girls too!

Wow! That's a point of view I wasn't expecting! Hadn't even thought! Since my OH comes from a long line of dockers, and he was the one who was so eager for me to see it, I figured it was a good thumb-nail sketch of those times and that area. See how movies can influence thought processes? Not coming from that time or place I don't have the deep emotional reaction to it, so I can still enjoy the film. Besides, I think we saw other aspects of it than you.

Funny isn't it? How we can all see the same thing and perceive different things from it. We all bring our own life experience and knowledge to everything. I expect it even matters what day one sees something, as I am sure that days experiences are more to the foreground.

No Bill Forsyth? Both Gregory's Girl and Local Hero look a little dated now but are still worth a look.

An Ungentlemanly Act.
To be watched on 2 April.
Great cast, good story development, shows some real Brit traits, and to my mind I think a reasonably balanced take on 48 hours that had such an impact on people of the day. In my experience every American bar one is utterly ignorant of these events, understandably as it wasn't their war.

Saw news article about an otter which prompted me to ask DH if he had ever seen the movie Ring of Bright Water .. answer of course was no. So I would add that to your list.

We watched that fairly recently with the kids and it still seemed good.
