Yes, every year.

I can't remember getting a letter, but maybe I just don't pay much attention. I am setup for direct debit. I check my contributions through https://www.gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record . I am setup for the paperless option.

Same as me, but each year I get a paper statement listing the monthly sums and dates on which they will be pulled from my account. Since the payments usually increase each year I would think this is normal to inform one of the payments and due dates.

Can you set up that online account from the US?

I set mine up from the USA a few years ago when the site was in beta test. Since then they added 2nd level verification where they send a verification code via text message. Not sure if they support numbers in the USA, but probably worth giving it a shot.

Yes, they support US numbers. I setup my account while in the US. I found the copy of my letter at https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/perso...y/print-letter

I set mine up from the US also and I can confirm that they support US numbers. In my experience, as recently as yesterday, the text message comes instantly. I'm always surprised at the speed.

I started going through the setup process...it seems very smooth.
However it's asking for my passport number, which I have, and my passport expiry date, which I don't, and I've not been able to find the thing for 6 months.
Guess I'll need to get it replaced.

How the hell did I lose that?

Wish there was a site where you could see when your passport was last used.

The fact they have acknowledged receipt of your payment is the important thing, at least you know your funds aren't lost in cyberspace.

Yep there is a slight increase for 2019/2020 tax year; the new rates are £3.00 a week for class 2, and £15.00 a week for class 3.

I've set mine up from abroad. As the verification code is machine automated, I imagine you can set it up from anywhere on Earth as long as you have a cell phone that can receive text/SMS messages and you give the correct international code.

I receive the yearly paper statement offering me to pay (I still like paper for my own records) but their website is handy and relatively easy to use, if a little too basic.
What I have noticed though, for myself and several other people, the website states missing gaps as being available to pay with voluntary class 3 contributions, even after HMRC have confirmed eligibility for class 2 rates.
The website could also do with some improvements though; for example being able to simply click into a previous year and making a simple online payment to purchase that particular year, instead of all this 13 weeks waiting around for someone to manually allocate funds.

If you had to photocopy your passport for your employer, then you could ask the employer for access to the photocopy to see the expiry date.
Or you could call the passport office and ask them over the phone; but they may not tell you over the phone because you wouldn't be able to prove you are who you say you are.
Or if you live near a British Embassy, you could pop in with photo ID and ask for the expiry date in person.

No truer words have been spoken, I wonder if they will ever get to that point. Certainly not within the 3 years before I start collecting my OAP.

Checking online I see that they have now credited all my years that I paid for. Their website maybe clunky, but glad that we can check.

Some good suggestions but I'll have another look/tidy up the house and if no luck i'll renew it.

The story continues.
Today I received a letter stating that as I had not written to them in advance their system had credited my bank transfer towards future payments and not missing years.
"If you make any future payments, please write to us and tell us what the payment is for & this will stop your direct debit breaking down"

So the clear message is to write/call them to ensure any payments are clearly allocated to missing years. I thought that as I was following their earlier letter with payments matching the gap years it wouldn't need further information, but I can see that it is better to be explicit.
At least the staff are helpful, and everything is sorted.

Ideally, with a slight change to their website, you could select the years and pay for them.

I called before sending the money and told them exactly which years to credit. The only problem I had was, due to wire fees, the received amount was a bit short so one year didn't get the full amount. Was fixed the following year.

Now, I make sure to send a few dollars more (cue Clint Eastwood music) to cover any fees.

Default Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

Hi All, sorry to jump on this but I'm relocating to the US at the end of February and I'm keen to pay my NI contributions.
I am a total novice with all this Class 2, Class 4 etc but as stated in the thread title Class 2 is being abolished.

I've just realised/noticed that you can check your contributions online and I've discovered that I have not been credited for 3 of the 5 years that I was at University - a letter has been sent

Does anyone have a link to the UK Gov section for setting up these payments? or should I wait until I am in the US?

Any help gratefully received.
