You will be on an L1 visa, you say - so why is your employer not providing U.S. tax assistance? There are a lot of U.S. specific tax issues you will need to learn. Also, there are some decisions you may want to make before you become U.S. tax resident in order to avoid tax issues later on.

Professional assitance is strongly recommended, and since you are going to the U.S. at your employer's convenience, the employer should pay for it.
