Personally I can't think of anything worse that I could do to my son..I will confess though that the issue has concerned me when I think about how other kids or future girlfriends will react when he's older if we stay in the US, the episode of Nip/Tuck sticks in my mind when he tries to circumcise himself after finding out his girlfriend doesn't want him in his uncut state..
My son has actually just seen a urologist who tried to convince me that he should be done, having to hold my son down screaming whilst some doctor fiddled with his penis is not something I'll be doing again in a hurry, he actually tried to retract his foreskin there and then until I told him to get the hell off..he's only two for ffs My own family doctor has said it would be barbaric to consider doing it at his age which I wasn't expecting to hear from an American doctor so I was pleasantly surprised with him..

[QUOTE=CaliforniaBride]It's my understanding that around 85% of American males are circumcised.

My 9 year old son isn't. I'm getting comments from other parents who have routinely had their son 'done'. They make me feel uncomfortable by implying that my son will somehow be traumatised in high school due to his not looking like other boys. That I've somehow doomed him to a life of ridicule and without acceptance.

Interesting thread as it had crossed my mind. I would never dream of having my son "done" and think it is a horrible idea. Incidentally, why is it right for religious reasons?

"Just because"

is not a good enough reason to choppy the chopper.

spoke to the wifey ages ago about this and she admits if she could turn the clock back, she would not have had my step-son done.

Think she's just getting fined for it. Although $75 must be a lot of money for a full-time protester, so no doubt one of her groupies will pay it for her

I wonder if she prefers her groupies cut or un-cut?

Those of the Jewish faith do it, it's a regular ceremony called a Bris Milah, representing a covenant between man and God. Performed when the baby is eight days old by a mohel-man trained especially in it.

We decided early on that our son wasn't going to get circumcised, we both agreed that it wasn't necessary. I just don't see the point in it in this day and age, and I was surprised just how many people agreed with us, including nearly all the nurses at the hospital where our son was born.

Why are we still discussing taking a knife to a penis?

No way, absolutely not, not in a million years, hell will freeze over first.

I am NOT mutilating my baby.

Oh, and the American Academy of Pediatrics no longer recommend routine circumcision. The Australian, Canadian and British equivalents have issued policy statements against getting it done as a matter of course.

As someone who had it done when I was 13, for medical reasons, can I ask why they would be against it?

Probably for the same reason they still think eating pork is bad. Nothing like a forward thinking and progressive society eh? I wonder what other area other than religion would tolerate someone specifically trained to mutilate babies shortly after birth?
