Whatever is available that's over what they can give to the teacher, they're putting into school supplies (which teachers tend to supplement anyway, so it's a slight backhander of sorts!)

All very complicated...

Well, don't I feel right stingy. I can't say I've done extra tipping for anyone at Christmas, or tipped some of the folks y'all have mentioned. I've never tipped a trash man, a mailman, a newspaper delivery or a school teacher (I don't get paper delivery or have kids though). I usually give around 20% tip to a hairdresser, but it would never occur to me to give more than that, or buy a gift. Guess I really don't pay attention to these things.

Before I lived in the US the only person I tipped was the car park attendant for one of the stores in Chester. I used to give him a bottle of whisky at Christmas and a couple of bottles throughout the year. That ensured there was always a car space with my name on it.

Don't.

I would wager that while many do give Xmas tips, the majority do not.

Did a quick straw poll at work that bore this out. May vary regionally, of course - especially big cities?

They all pay attention at this time of year...card in the box with "Postie" does the job, or if you've a post box by your door, then tape it to the lid.

And how much, well depends on what you think is reasonable, how much you can afford and all that...but our old postie didn't complain about $10 to Dunkin D's.

Nor have I. I gave a larger tip than normal to my hairdresser for my last appointment, but have never tipped my mailman, garbage man, etc.

My Sales Manager complimented me today on my haircut. Only thing was I had one 2 weeks ago. He said well, it looks nice, I said thanks, I combed it.
