Hmm...

Any thoughts on whether / how / how much to tip bin men (trash collectors, garbage guys) - you know the blokes with the trucks who collect the rubbish?

We don't tip either and haven't encountered any bother.

180 degrees, otherwise their trash cans won't empty

Everyone out here has at least 160 acres so no need of a trash service. It probably looks bad from outer space but you don't see anything from the road.

Yeah.. there's me, about to buy a 3.5 million dollar upper west side condo.. I don't think I'd be able to afford the tips!! Better reconcile myself to the "idiocy of rural life."

My husband was a postie for the Royal. Mail and used to receive about 400 pounds a year in Christmas tips. There are generous people everywhere . Not just in New York.

As per I came to this thread late. I am now worried because I have a hairdresser's appointment tomorrow and never gave it a thought about tipping her extra just 'cause it is Christmas. So now I have something else to sodding worry about. As for our mail lady Bugger, bugger, bugger, why did I read this thread? Y'know Yorkshire folk are really Scots with the generosity removed
The reason I quoted you, dear CAdreaming is not only because you started the thread but I want to know what's wrong with us old hippies?

crap crap crap/ just spend $100 this weekend already on gifts for the eldest kids teacher and bus driver, the other kids 3 preschool teachers.

had not even thought about bin men, mailman, Sunday paper boy or hairdresser.

How do you tip the bin men? they come while i am at work?

and the postie - do you leave it in the mailbox and hope she pays attention to whats in there?

and how much should we tip the paperboy (sunday paper only)?

and my hairdresser - is a lady who has a set up in her basement in her home in my road. shes already done my hair a few weeks ago so i guess ill have to go buy something and drop it off.

lordy - its all so complicated and now i worry im slighting someone unintentionally

Mail man...$20.

Garbage collectors...$20. If we put out bulk garbage we usually give them $20 at the time throughout the year.

Recycling...$20.

Hairdresser...I've used the same lady for several years...I usually double my bill at Christmas.
