Dd has one long sleeve stripe dress she's been wearing for three years and it still looks good. She may still fit it this winter.

For younger kids (younger than, say, 10) Hanna Andersson is the best, IMO. It's expensive, but their clothes are much, much better made than anything else. Buy everything at least one size too big as it will last for several years.
We get a lot of kid's stuff at Target...
Other recommendations (i've got girls aged 8 and 5):
The Children's Place is a great place to stock up on basics. Really cheap and can have nice designs. One caveat: the quality is a little lacking, their shirts may last about ten washings but that's it.
I've found Land's End has great kid's clothes. They're extremely plain, but they hit the sweet spot of price/quality, especially their outerwear.
LL Bean has terrific kids clothes, and everything is lifetime guaranteed. It's a little more than Gap, but not much more. Likewise, REI has terrific outerwear and boots/shoes for kids that don't cost much more than going elsewhere.
Stride Rite has the best shoes for kids, IMO. Not a great revelation there.
For boutique stuff, Boden (already mentioned) is really cute stuff. Very pricy. Le Petit Bateau is ridiculously pricey but nice if you need something dressy.
I've found Old Navy to be complete junk. Gap is only slightly better and not worth the increased price over Target.

Old Navy for school stuff. I also get the odd thing for my kid from Boden, their stuff is gorgeous but on the pricey side.
