We end up using the strip ones as Pajama bottoms sometimes.
Dd has one long sleeve stripe dress she's been wearing for three years and it still looks good. She may still fit it this winter.
Here she is in it this summer in UK.

Cute girl! Sad to see she's got a monkey on her back at such a young age though...

For younger kids (younger than, say, 10) Hanna Andersson is the best, IMO. It's expensive, but their clothes are much, much better made than anything else. Buy everything at least one size too big as it will last for several years.

We get a lot of kid's stuff at Target...

Other recommendations (i've got girls aged 8 and 5):

The Children's Place is a great place to stock up on basics. Really cheap and can have nice designs. One caveat: the quality is a little lacking, their shirts may last about ten washings but that's it.

I've found Land's End has great kid's clothes. They're extremely plain, but they hit the sweet spot of price/quality, especially their outerwear.

LL Bean has terrific kids clothes, and everything is lifetime guaranteed. It's a little more than Gap, but not much more. Likewise, REI has terrific outerwear and boots/shoes for kids that don't cost much more than going elsewhere.

Stride Rite has the best shoes for kids, IMO. Not a great revelation there.

For boutique stuff, Boden (already mentioned) is really cute stuff. Very pricy. Le Petit Bateau is ridiculously pricey but nice if you need something dressy.

I've found Old Navy to be complete junk. Gap is only slightly better and not worth the increased price over Target.

Clarkes are cheaper and better quality I've found, though more selection for boys than girls.

Stride Rite, $60 for a pair of toddler shoes? puck that

My kids are young adults now but I loved the childrens' clothes from Next, M&S and often even the Ladybird brand from Woolworths.

American fashions are very boring/bland and middle of the road, but places to buy reasonably priced clothes for children include 'The Children's Place', 'Gymboree' the "Limited Too" (also some others but their names escape me!) and of course clothes from the Gap, Babies/ToysRus, Target and department stores like Nordstrom, Sears etc.

I know that quite a few expat mums are buying clothes by mail order from this place:

http://www.hannaandersson.com/home.asp?cchkrd=y

and also mail order from LL Bean.

Don't forget to see what's in Marshalls and TJ Maxx, it's hit and miss but often they have really good stuff in at good prices.

Old Navy for school stuff. I also get the odd thing for my kid from Boden, their stuff is gorgeous but on the pricey side.

If you want quality clothing that you can customize, the answer is make it yourself. (And, some people enjoy doing it.)

For gorgeous european style shoes for kids you can't go wrong with piperlime, free shipping and returns! To be honest I seem to buy a lot more online than I do in stores clothes and shoes wise, Target is the only store that I go back to for clothes on a regular basis.
