I am a UK male, divorced and now want to remarry my American girlfriend and live in States. I have a child and am paying maintenance for that child.
What are the implications, am I
(a) allowed to move to US leaving UK
(b) what are the procedures for payments.
I do not wish to cease paying just know where I stand.

Is that "and" a typo' and you meant "an" ? You need to identify an American Lady so
inclined and then go and read the information on the docsteen website thoroughly. Doc

Thanks for your response...I have edited my original posting to hopefully make it clearer. What I am trying to say is will the maintenance stop me from leaving the UK...Initially when I go to US I may not be working but intend to seek work as soon as I can. I am not trying to get out of the payments I just need to know if I can leave UK.

There is no rule about child support that would keep you in the UK unless for some
strange reason it was specified in the divorce agreement (not likely). Alvena

If it is a legal obligation with such a proviso specified as part of the divorce
settlement, you tell us. The USA does not worry about immigrants sending money to
their home countries --(and since Sept 11th) so long as they do it through legal
channels. For some countries, deposits from emigrants resident in the USA is a large
chunk of their national economy. Previously there were posts about debts, especially
unsecured ones, and whether a person can skip the country and leave a de facto
bankruptcy behind. And what connection do our credit worthiness reporting agencies
have with those of the UK or Canada. Do a search in groups.google.com for that.
