Default Chernobyl

Did any of you watch the program on HBO last night about Chernobyl?
It was devastating to watch babies, toddlers, young adults with cancer,
heart disease, as well as mental and physical handicaps all because of
The radiation. I still have vivid memories of that disaster way back in
1986.

It was so sad to see infants with growths the size of a football attached to
the back of their heads, and backs etc. One little boy was 5 but had feet
like a baby, with his eyes sunk back in his head, poor little bugger had
no hope!

They had a team of 15 doctors from the U.S operate on the children with
holes in their hearts, one doctor explained that one $300 patch was all
it took to fix this young girl, but the average wage of a doctor was only
$100 per month. Out of 3000 patients this year only 10-20% will have this
operation.

The really sad part is (I saw it on the discovery channel last year) Chernobyl
is still burning under all that concrete they poured on it, everyday it gets weaker,
One day it will erupt, and it will all happen over again.

What a nightmare!

(by the way the radiation cloud, hit Wales and Ireland, that I didn't know?)

Oscar Winning Chernobyl Heart Premieres This Month on HBO
The Oscar Winning documentary Chernobyl Heart, inspired by and featuring the work of Chernobyl Children’s Project International (CCPI), premieres this month on HBO. Air dates are noted above. The film, produced and directed by Maryann De Leo working in collaboration with CCPI, focuses on the continuing effects of radiation on the children of Belarus, the country most affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986. The film prominently features Adi Roche, our International Executive Director. The film follows an October 2002 delegation of CCPI representatives into the "exclusion zone," to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and follows the invisible trail of radiation to the country's hospitals, cancer centers, orphanages, and mental asylums. The film also movingly portrays the pediatric heart surgeon Dr. William Novick, whose work in Belarus is funded and logistically managed by Chernobyl Children's Project International.

I didn't see the programme. There is an organisation, (don't know the name of it), that sends children from the Chernobyl area to the USA. There was about 6-8 kids in our town for about a month in the summer. There were more kids staying in surrounding towns with local families. They get medical, dental, and eye exams while they are here. They also get new clothes and shoes and some supplies to take back to their families. The organisers said that the clean air and no pollution seems to help the kids. They seem to have a great time going to different places in between their medical things.

HBO have some great documentaries. Being a father, I hate watching anything that shows kids suffering, but it was an interesting insight.

Aye, bit creepy, seeing how deserted the place is and all that, obviously, but still don't think of how bad it really was and all that, and to think that the place is crumbling and needs work is ever so slightly worrying...

Aye, might be a fake journey, still, even with a tour, some genuine images of the area.
