Default Cheque from the Revenue...

In sterling of course, but with my home (US) address on...

It's not that much money though, but wondering what people here are doing with cheques like that?

thanks,

A.

I got one last month. I posted it back to my bank in England with a covering letter with my account details, and they paid it into my account. Posting to being in my account was about a week.

Did the bank back in Blighty know you were out in the USA..?

I wasn't keen to give them an excuse to close the account.

Which bank are you with? Barclays are fine sending things to me in the US.

But if you haven't given them your new address, because you're having statements send to a friend or relative's house in the UK, then just send the cheque to them and have them pay it in for you.

Your US bank should be able to deposit for you.
I have had my US bank deposit UK sterling checks several times without any problems.

Doesn't that cost an arm and a leg?

I do the same as Lansbury...send it back to the Nat West. The Nat West know I haven't lived in the UK for over 18 years. They send correspondence to my US address.

We bank with First Direct in the UK so paying in a cheque by post is a standard feature with them, although you can pay in at HSBC counters in the UK if you want. They had no problems with changing our address to the US, and in fact give us personal identity numbers in lieu of a UK postcode should we need to use their phone banking.

[QUOTE=Jerseygirl;11396440]Doesn't that cost an arm and a leg? QUOTE]

I'm with Citizens Bank here in MA and they say they are going to charge me $5 for depositing a check from the UK, they never do though, so its free - something that would never happen at a bank in the UK.

thanks

Brendan

No, my bank did not charge me a fee.
I thought they must be making a lot on the exchange rate but the rate they gave me was in line with the going exchange rate.

I think if they charge a fee or not depends on the relationship with the bank, how long a customer, amount of business etc.

I post them back with my usual paying slip completed.

Neither Barclays nor First Direct have a problem with us having a US address.
