Haven't heard of Stater Brothers but I do spend altogether too much time and money in TJs. Our local Jewel carries "white" (ie. light yellow - normal) cheddar from Vermont that does the trick too.

I agree with that statement. The only place that sells that near me is the Wal-Mart Super Centers. Another good cheese source is Publix - I think they are mainly a FL/GA/AL company but their own extra sharp white chedder is very good, a little pricey but worth it.

I notice that no one has made any comments about Cheese Whizz and Velveeta.

Got some Graffton Village cheddar, from Vermont, aged 2 years and it was lovely, only problem is, it comes in tiny little waxed 8oz blocks, $5.65 a piece...very nice, but a bit pricey for everyday munching

Is there no Co-op near where you live? They usually have a good selection of imported and other decent cheese.

No Co-op here, well not that I know of anyway. Nevertheless, I'm fortunate to have Trader Joes (Welsh Cheddar), Stater Bros (Irish Cheddar) and World Market (Heinz Salad Cream & English chocolate). Stater Bros is just a five minute drive ... and Albertson's is only five minutes away too (they come in handy for half decent French bread!). Oh, and Target usually have a decent supply of English chocolate too! Just wish I could find Oxo cubes and a decent joint of lamb and I would be sorted (World Market only stock vegetable Oxo cubes! )

I did a search and couldn't believe that only 4 co-ops are listed for the whole of California - surely this can't be true?

http://www.ecobusinesslinks.com/food...ural_foods.htm

"California
North Coast Coop
Arcata, Eureka North Coast Co-op is a member-owned consumer food cooperative in Northern California operating two full-service grocery stores in Arcata and Eureka, a bakery, and deli.
Davis Food Coop
Davis Everyone can shop, anyone may join. 40 different varieties of organic produce. Over 750 items in bulk.
Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op
Sacramento Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op (SNFC) is a consumer-owned, natural foods market, located in midtown Sacramento. SNFC is dedicated to providing the highest quality natural foods and products to our shoppers and being a trusted resource for consumer information.
Ocean Beach People's Food Store
San Diego The Co-op offers an extensive selection of organic produce, organic and natural grocery items, organic dairy products, bulk items, perishable items, fresh deli items, books, vitamins, herbs, cruelty-free bodycare, and aromatherapy products."

For lamb, Costco stocks legs and chops - though lamb is pricey anywhere in the US

I love real feta cheese but am disappointed to find that most feta sold in the US is made of cow's milk. Even my local Wholefoods used to sell sheep's milk feta (a few weeks back) but now it sells "domestic feta" made from cow's milk

Had a nice bit of boursin last night (I'm normally a "hard" cheese guy, but got into boursin a while back when I was fling Singapore Airlines a lot). It only a small like a small bit, and I sat down with a packet of digestives, the boursin, a bottle of red and flicked on CSI. Next thing I know, the credits are going up, the cheese is all gone, and the red is almost the same. As I was throwing the cheese box out, I noticed the nutrition label....seeems I chomped my way thru almost 2 days worth of saturated fat in a little over half an hour!!! oops!

One of my friends ate a pound of Velveeta in one evening over the campfire. You still sure you want the Velveeta comments?
