Same here. But South Africa in our case. I won't bore you lot with it yet again.

The huge number of check cashing places is due to a data gatherer called Chex Systems. Once you're on here through offending one of the member banks, you will find it difficult to get a conventional checking account, although the banks may offer a very restricted one (such as with ATM card rather than ATM/Debit card and without checkbook).

I hate cheques, but as there's shite cover if you get screwed with direct deposits, and it's a mare cancelling them, I haven't bothered, well also because I never exprected to be here for so long *l* so stuck with cheques for the bills over here, never use them in shops though, debit card is so much easier.

Keeping account of what I've spent, I've a book that I write everything down in like a checking book, easy that way to keep track of how the money goes with debit card, helps keep in budget and all that.

I am of course hoping that everybody says 'nope I never used a checkbook either' so I can go nyah nyah na nyeh nyeh to my husband.
yeah, cheque books/check books (whatever!) are kinda old in britain, i have used more checks here in USA in 1 year than my whole life in blighty, why would you need to when in blighty you can use direct debit for bills (as the banks are pretty trust worthy not to screw up) and debit cards/credit cards.

what annoys me is that you are more dependant on cheques in USA and they charge you when you run out - double wamey!!

There are a few in the UK that can have a bank account, but can't do DD or cheques from their accounts. So in order to pay bills they have to use postal orders or pay in person. Its not only in the US. There are poor people everywhere.

Well you were suggesting only the poor bother with cheques and cash in the UK...ain't always the case, and yeah, plenty of options for people that don't open a bank account with online bank accounts with places like egg.

If you're poor, you probably are not going to be dealing with internet banking, I would imagine. I'm only referring to the poor, I have no idea about the weird and why they'd chose otherwise.

Another gripe is that you need to have quite a high balance in your account or incur bank charges (yet they don't pay you interest on your current/checking account as far as I'm aware - maybe the smaller banks do?).

Worse....is that it takes up to 10 working days for a cheque to clear when making a deposit into your account compared to three days in the UK (especially more than $10k as the IRS is notified.... ). In these days of electronic banking why does it take so long? I guess the banks are really raking it in on the interest they're not paying you.....

See, I guess we have a good bank, or credit union. Our checks, that I deposit in an ATM, clear immediately. In that I can draw out funds immediately. I can use my debit card for shopping immediately. There is no limit. I don't pay for my checking account either. In the UK, it would take as long as 3 bank working days for a cheque to clear. And they meant it as well. If I deposited my cheque (I had an employer that wouldn't do DD as it would cost him more money) on a Friday, I couldn't expect it to clear till Tuesday or Wednesday at the earliest. That was a pain in the rear.

egg is done purely over the phone or online, so there's options out there for people...and even so, hard pressed to not get a debit card in the UK unless your there on a temp visa.

Since Dec 1, cheques are electronically cleared and should go through straight away, but it's hit and miss as it if the bank does it or not, and same with utility companies...does make it a pain.
