It all depends on the state - I had to take a test to get my MD drivers license.

It's all very confusing - I still haven't taken my test what with everything else going on.... I downloaded the whole 115 page driving booklet from the TN Gov website and it totally contradicts itself... one page says within 30 days of arriving in state you need to take test, then on the other leaflet i had it said 3 months..
I wouldn't advocate reading any manual to pass the driving test unless you are blind or retarded

I was paying $600 for 6 months of liability and uninsured motorist cover only and that has gone down to $480 for 6 months with liability, uninsured mot, fire and theft and medical with State Farm - and that's on a 98 Ford Escort. Not bad at all I thought :)
we live where you live......:D

Do they use insurance groups like in the UK?

What would a Mustang be like to insure?

Call an insurance agent in DE and find out!

you don't need to take a new test.. exchange your UK drivers license for an american one... that's what I did in Washington DC... they have a book of countries where you can exchange a license from...
If you come on a perm.res. visa, you have to apply for a current driving licence in the state to are going to reside. Check in WEB, DMV.(your state)GOV.

I downloaded the whole 115 page driving booklet from the TN Gov website and it totally contradicts itself... one page says within 30 days of arriving in state you need to take test, then on the other leaflet i had it said 3 months.. and then when i called them they said I could just drive on my UK license, then the driving test place said since a new law was passed in July you only get a certificate of driving if you are on a temporary visa

In any event, I switched my insruance from Farmers to State Farm last week - they said its valid on UK license, but I will take the test soon anyway. I was paying $600 for 6 months of liability and uninsured motorist cover only and that has gone down to $480 for 6 months with liability, uninsured mot, fire and theft and medical with State Farm - and that's on a 98 Ford Escort. Yep, I don't think police or officials know what is correct. I was told three different things, but the Arkanasas police told me I could drive for 6 months on my UK license and then would need to take the Arkansas test. I took the written test and was told I could only drive with a license-holder of over 21 whilst on the permit, and come back in 30 days. LOL so when I was driving hubby to work it would be on my learner's permit, and after I dropped him off at work and drove away, I would then be driving on my UK license! The actual driving test here consisted of - - drive around the block twice and park where you were before. Someone on here advised driving like a little old lady and it worked.

Debbie :)

Off topic, I know, but your picture of Zoe Wanamaker reminded me of a good story.

A few years back, my younger brother was flying to Canada from the UK to take part in an ice hockey goalie camp. He was, I guess, about 12 or 13 at the time, and was travelling alone. It turned out that he was sat next to Zoe Wanamaker on the plane, and I guess she must have felt sorry for him because she plied him with sweets and chatted away to him for most of the flight.

What a nice lady:)

An irrelevant aside: in Canada I had State Farm insurance and they said they would not insure me, at any cost, on two particular cars:

1) Ford Mustang
2) Jeep TJ (Wrangler)

Now have State Farm in VA Beach. We're paying $600 and change for 6 months on a brand new Corolla - exciting!

Insurance -huh, who needs it anyway;)

Let me restate that, $400 and change. Just got a cheque in the mail with a note from SF saying we'd been overcharged. I will never again doubt that pigs can fly.

LOL We had the same occurence with State Farm. They actually overcharged us the first time they figured it out and then the insurance came down. It was a very nice surprise to say the least. :)

But what is the deal with every 6 months? I hate that and much prefer the yearly renewal in the UK!

We can put the price up twice a year then rather than just once ;)
