Re: Charleston, South Carolina
Nice post
Based on this post, I would see all this an advantage (for you Sally) from moving from LA
1) Budget deficit nowhere near as high as California
3) Double digit unemployment also exists in California, not really an issue for your circumstances where if hubby's job changes likelihood of staying in the same state is small.
5) Again average income isn't going to affect you personally, neither of you would be looking for jobs, however houses, cost of living expenses are likely to be MUCH lower than LA
13 Gangs, around a 10th of LA I guess. It will be cooler and you have your air con on all the time anyway, and by your own admission never go anywhere so the humidity won't kill you.

I guess that's all true, I was focussing on the political/race/religious issues which concern me. It seems the area of research work would be a good fit for OH, but he would prefer to stay in LA, although he did actually mention Stanford as somewhere he'd like to go if things don't work out here.

What about Boston? Okay, I know one of the massive labs just dumped hundreds of people a few months ago, but there are plenty of others and universities hiring experienced people. The missus, her best mate manages a research lab, so might be able to ask around if you're looking for a new location...but saying that, she's about to pop at any second so might be staying with her folks on maternity leave.

Her husband does something similar for Brigham and Womens Hospital, but all those hospitals are pretty incestuous for contacts, about 6 of the big ones around Brookline Ave at Fenway anyway.

I've been to Charleston several times. My father and stepmother built a house on Grand Oaks Plantation in West Ashley about 5 years ago. They love it. They are staunch Democrats as well! It's a nice suburb of Charleston. It does get extremely hot and humid there!

Re: Charleston, South Carolina
I am reviving this thread as Charleston is back on the table.
My husband's job security at UCLA looks shakier all the time and the move might make sense for us. Obviously I will have to go and check it out for myself, but just wondered if anyone had any more input on the area. My daughter would be a high school junior at the time if we did move, and this would be a major consideration.
Thanks.

That sucks about UCLA though, I thought it had been sorted out. Is this the only option on the table?

I don't know anything about South Carolina, but I know it isn't easy taking a teen to another area and school. Best of luck with that if you go.

It just looks dicey at UCLA.
The attraction of this one is good research funding and they are very keen to get him.

But on the positive side you could fly in and stay with us for a week so you can visit your son.
A move to Stanford would be better though

Thanks and I'll mention Stanford again.
