http://www.flychina.com/links.htm

=== CHINESE EMBASSY NOTICE ===

Whereas the U.S. Embassy and Consulates General in China raised U.S.
visa fee to $100 as from November 1, 2002, the Chinese Embassy and
Consulates General in the United States are instructed by Beijing to
adjust the Chinese visa fee for U.S. citizens in light of reciprocity.

The new rates are as follows, and will take effect as of May 1, 2003.
Single entry visa: $50
Double entry visa: $75
Multiple entry visa for six months: $100
Multiple entry visa for twelve months: $150

After 9.11 and since the break out of U.S.-Iraq War, strengthening
the national security has become an important goal and task of every
country. Out of security concern, the Chinese Embassy and Consulates
General in United States will cease, on and from May 1, 2003, the
mail (including express delivery) service for application of Chinese
visas.

Applicants are required to come to the visa office for visa
application. If an applicant cannot come personally, he/she may
entrust a relative or friend or visa agent to come to the visa
office for application process."

Using the term "reciprocity" with an apologetic tone, the Houston consulate's web site implies that this is a tit-for-tat response to the crappy way that the US is treating the citizens of China when they apply for US visas.

Our visa fees were raised for Chinese citizens to $100, so China raised its to $50 -- still a bargain in contrast. Chinese artists and such have had to cancel tours of the US because visas are not being issued in a reasonable time, and so it only seems fitting in Chinese culture to create additional annoyances for American citizens wanting to visit China. The annoyance? Next time I will have to mail my application to a travel agency who will hand deliver it to the consulate rather than to mail it directly to the consulate. As a tit-for-tat response, that is far from the kind of crap that my country is giving to citizens of China.

I mailed my passport with a whopping $65 dollars a few days ago - new rules do not go into effect until 1 MAY. That includes the business visa fee of $30, a $5 handling fee for doing it by mail, and $30 for one-day rush service instead of the usual four days.

Back to day 161 waiting for TSC to get off of its ass, and then another nine months or so for the Guangzhou consulate to do whatever it does or doesn't do. If I didn't have children, immigration for us would be in the other direction.

In all fairness. The $100 application fee is not limited to China.
I believe it applies everywhere.
