Cashing a UK check at a US bank

Anybody done this? I received a check this morning from the U.K. and I am hoping my U.S. bank will be able to cash it into my account.

(i) the bank will stick it to you with charges, primarily because of the cost to the bank of processing the cheque, not because they make much out of it. Not only is there the cost of collecting the cash value, but they are also going to give the tourist rate on the FX conversion to get it into dollars
(ii) it will take ages before you get the money as there is no automated way of clearing a British cheque
(iii) unless it is for at least £60 the bank may not even accept it as it will cost them more to process than they figure it is worth to you.

In short, if possible you should get it paid into a British bank account, or send it back to the sender and ask the proceeds to be paid to a relative or friend on your behalf, or you could just have it framed as it may be virtually worthless!

mmm its for 50 pounds, so sending it home may be the only option.

As you say in a later post, send it home - I've sent about 6 checks home now. The only charge is 3x37c stamps. I'm sure you still have bills needing paying back home. I intend to use my UK account to pay for trips back and local spending money....

You should get yourself some 80c stamps for posting letters to the UK. It's 80c p/1 oz to the UK. Don't forget those airmail labels either!
