Hi, VW will offer long/short term leases i believe depending on your visa status. Check out the foreign business scheme.

Re the insurance question, if your wife is already insured try getting your car added as a second car on the same policy. My wife (USC) asked her insurance company for a quote for adding a VW Golf GTi (brand new lease) for my use and they quoted her $486 for 6 months on a 2012 model and $406 for 6 months on a 2013 model. Less than what she was paying to insure her own car! I am very confident that AIG would not beat that!
As for leasing, if you can use your wife as a co-signatory then you have much more choice than just the companies that offer deals to expats. As an example, I am dealing with a VW dealer who said as far as the rate was concerned then if didn't make much difference whether it was through the expats scheme or with my wife as co-signer.
