Have you tried looking at some of the comparison websites like confused.com and comparethemarket.com they will at least give you some idea what to expect

He shouldn't do.....but it will help if he has a letter from his present insurers proving no claims etc

It can take a bit of doing to get a decent quote. I brought back evidence of no claims or accidents, ever (I've been driving for over 30 years). Many companies would not give me a quote without a specific car, but said sure, they'd give me full credit for no claims. When it came down to it, they quoted a pretty high premium based on no recent experience driving in the UK, even though I supposedly was given a no claims bonus.

These days I think it is easier to get online quotes, but ba careful you don't get stung like I did.

After 3 years back, my current annual premium is something like £300 (fully comp, single driver, 1999 Subaru Legacy estate (standard, not a fancy Outback or anything) value about £2,000.

Moneysupermarket.com worked for me! As for quotes, yes they often want specific car details. I 'borrowed' reg' numbers from similar cars for sale in autotrader to get an idea.

When we went over last winter we bought a Ford Fiesta '97 automatic 1.2L and went with the AA which cost us £125 for the year. We shopped around and found some a lot higher but others around the quoted figure. You will need to tell them what the car is. We did ours all online and did not speak to anybody.

If you don't know what car you'll be having just put in something that you're interested in to give you an idea of cost.

We had been out of the country for 35 years and had a letter from our current insurance company but we were not asked for it. And we are in the same age group as you.

If you go into the website for Martins money matter. Can't remember the exact name but if you google and put in Martins money letter it will come up and he gives tips and advice and web pages.

Funnily enough I just got my Dad to ask this question of his insurance co (Lloyds I think). Basically they said if I can prove no claims in Oz and have a full UK licence (which I do) there will not be an issue with applying full NCB. Which is just as well as I think I'm going to buy an Audi A3.

I suspect that other companies would do similar and I'll probably shop around, but figured that Dad already has a relationship with his insurance company so I'd start there.
