Car Insurance In Florida Needed

We're in the process of moving to Orlando and bought a car this weekend. We tried Progressive for insurance and were quote $1k for 6 months because they loaded it as we have no US driving history :scared:

Does any body know of any comopanies that specialise in providing UK citizens with better rates or any comapnies that will accept UK driving histories if we get a letter of no claims?

Cheers
Tim

Get a Florida license and you'll have more choice of insurance companies.

We've used Nationwide since our move here over 8 years ago and they have been very good. We are not in Florida though.

Did you get an online quote? It's usually better to meet one of them face to face than fill in a generic on-line form.

Count yourself lucky, mine is $1200 for 6 months and I've been driving in the US for nearly two years.

Got a quote from Geico yesterday (the cockney lizard persuaded me to do it), the quote was $2400 for 6 months.

Thanks for that, unfortunately we fly home today then we come back on the 4th Feb and pick the car up the following day. Without insurance we can't do that so we may have to bite the bullet for the first 6 months!

Oh well at least the gas is cheap.

Progressive is one of the few that will even take you on ..but they will expect you to get your licence pronto .. $1000 is pretty cheap ...

No companies give better rates to people who are used to driving on the wrong side of the road ...

You start anew...

we went down to our allstate broker and she took into account our UK no claims - i know she wasnt supposed to do this from conversations i have had since - however the quote came down from over $1k to 400bux and got through their underwriters!! maybe it was something else but i would def recommend calling some brokers.

Dear Tim, When we moved to Fl last year with no Fl license we used A and A All Assurance Agency in Fort Lauderdale phone number 954-491-1942. Speak to Valida, this company specialises in Brits in Fl. We had a Ford Explorer '02 and got insurance third party at $950 ish for 12 months. Hope this helps. You might get to speak to Jill instead of Valida.......golly she shouts in a very strong northern accent at you !!! Good Luck ! Katie-kins

Insurance companies take into account your credit history as well. If you have no US credit history, you're insurance quote will reflect this (especially with Geico, I know!) When we first came over, we bought our car and then, for lack of knowing anywhere else, signed up with Geico. But, we just gave them an initial downpayment (enough to take the car off the lot) and then the very next day I started hunting a better quote/policy. Luckily I found it on the first try....I found State Farm and we've had them for 2 years. Insurance is expensive anyway, but State Farm were a bit better, certainly than Geico the ripoffs.

Thankfully I've never had to search for insurance quotes under my own steam. The wife has been with State Farm since she was a teenager (a few years ago) and we only pay $360 every 6 months, fully comp.

Sorry to hear that the OP will pay so much but you need to get on the ladder somehow.

You should be glad you don't want to live in NY or NJ, Auto insurance would/could be double that.

When we arrived in Florida 13 months ago, our first car ins was with Nationwide, we paid $1300 for six months. We then went to Geico who were $800 for six months. On renewal we shopped around and through AAA we were quoted $1400 for A YEAR,we were also able to pay monthly with no charges. So shop around, a real pain I know, and I hate this six months nonsense,we are sorted for the year now, then the game begins again !!

Our car insurance nearly halved when we moved FROM Palm Beach County last December. I asked the rep and he said (quote) "All the old snowbirds from NY and NJ in Palm Beach make it a very high insurance risk"
