In Michigan, the driver/owner covers their own car, if you get into an accident you make a claim to your own car insurance only... Even though I was not at fault my insurance still at to pay the $8000 plus medical costs... It will be intestine to see the renewal quotes.

Though depends on state.

Down my way, unless you get rid of the car or move, they can apply hefty cancellation fees. Not all companies do, but some do.

Though we're also able to get 12 month policies too, for a slight discount down my way.
