Can I pay an airline to carry an extra case?
Hi all!
I posted earlier about a potential move back to the UK. I have taken my courage in my hands and am beginning to organise.
I will ship my boxes but I am wondering if there is an airline that I can pay to carry an extra piece of luggage (25-30kg)?
And while I am here, I might ask also......I know my boxes are to be shipped to UK and I can put my parents address on it as I obviously don't have my own place organised yet.......has anyone used a shipping company where they allow you to change the final destination while the goods are in transit? Obviously it is going to the same part of the world so the same ship applies, just a final destination update....i am guessing not but thought I would ask!
I am making a coffee if anyone would like one?!

Do you mean an unaccompanied bag, or accompanied exces baggage? If the latter, yes this is standard practice and straightforward. If the former, Google "air freight". I think there's a company called excess baggage (imaginative) that specialises in shipping small amounts of excess baggage. If you are returning home some airlines can be very flexible and generous when it comes to allowing lots of luggage.

Hi dunroving,
Thanks for reply. I meant accompanied excess baggage - great, I didn't think it was possible!

Most airline show a price for extra checked luggage on their websites. We have paid 40$US for an extra checked suitcase when my son flew last summer. It usually has the same weight limit as the free case.

Hi, look at the Qantas website, they have a page dedicated to this and it sets out all the fees. Its $90 for each extra suitcase between Oz and the UK, the weight limit is 23kg per piece.
I've shipped most of my stuff home a few weeks ago but before I did I sent home a box of shoes and jackets that were all leather and suede a few months ago. I did this because everything goes mouldy up here in the wet season and I wanted to protect them! It was a medium size box and I sent it surface mail - it cost just under $100 with Australia Post - bah!

Re: Can I pay an airline to carry an extra case?
Hi, we've just moved back from Sydney. I booked one way tickets with SQ and they gave us 30kg each instead of normal 23ish.
My luggage was 54kg (including hand luggage) and they charged me for only 5kg excess at check in. It's $22/kg.
Qantas have the one bag only policy, not sure if you can pay for another one.
I had to give my parents address and they said no problem to change whilst en route.
Good luck with the move :-)

Hi Penny,
Did Singapore airlines deliver the extra luggage then after you got back? How long did it take? Thank you!!

No, checked in all of it.
I bought a brilliant new suitcase from bagworld.com.au:
Product: Qty: Price:
High Sierra ATGO 81cm Expandable Wheeled Duffel Grey HS559 1 $179.95
Loads of room and light when empty. Was 30kg at check in. Actually I think my bags were 47kg and hand luggage 17kg so I did really well only being charged 5kg excess. Was still cheaper than sending it (although I didn't investigate Aus Post, I ran out of time).

Most airlines have a free limit and a paid limit. Your free is 1/2/3 depending on class of ticket, destination, etc, but you can pay to take as many as 8 extra suitcases in some situations.
Here in Hong Kong we see it quite frequently with 'traders' moving goods back to more isolated areas. Traders from Nigeria and Kenya will stock up on mobile phones in Hong Kong and Shenzhen and then fill (and duct tape) 7 or 8 'boxes' that they check in as luggage. I asked one about the practice and he said bringing it home with him as 'luggage' was considerably cheaper than air freight, and far 'safer' in that nothing things didn't go missing as easily.
