Re: Can I buy a gun?
Try finding one, and then the ammunition for it!
I went to Bass Pro Shops this week, they were out of all ammo, Walmart only had 9mm and a sign saying patrons could only buy 1500 rounds of it per day. Yes only 1500!
Then today I was at the range, which was packed (I waited 1 hour to get a lane), and met a few guys who said the wait time on a new Glock was 3 weeks at the local gunshop.

Ray:
Good thing to note. I note that OP doesn't say what type of weapon he plans to buy. [From my army days, I can't bring myself to call a firearm a "gun." But I digress. It was OK to call the 16/50's and the 5/38's on the Iowa a "gun" but not an M16A1. Go figure.]
The only point is that I want to emphasize is that even if the weapon is "legal" to own, a violation of things like carrying permits or concealed weapons charges can be bad new indeed for a non-citizen.
If OP wants to hunt and has the appropriate licenses, he should be fine for immigration purposes. However, a pistol is a different matter.
Had a client once who was a store-owner and kept an unregistered pistol adjacent to the cash drawer. He was robbed at gunpoint and the robber was walking out of the store when client pulled the pistol and shot the robber in the back killing him. Of course, this constituted a righteous prosecution for involuntary manslaughter. With my coaching, the defense attorney plea bargained it down to unlawful possession of a firearm [it was a very sympathetic case] and they I was able to avoid removal during the ensuing removal proceedings.
Although the facts may differ, it demonstrates that even if an alien possess a legal firearm, USE of it in a situation which is not self-defense can cause problems. [BTW, when Dick Cheney had that hunting accident, it helped me convince an IJ to reverse her decision on removability].

I can't sympathise much with someone who breaks firearms laws, even a simple registration law.

I own several firearms in the state of New York (long rifles, no pistols), purchased when I first got my GC and moved over in 2001; most recently I purchased a 12 bore shotgun and forgot the whole procedure to do the transfer correctly. In NY you need to provide a drivers license for id and gc if your not a citizen, 3 months of utility bills (leccy, cable etc). If your address where you live doesn't match what your NY drivers license says you'll need to go the DMV and get a 'sticker' for the back and write in the correct one. The NCIS background check will most likely delay you since it does for the vast majority of folk that put permanent resident on the ATF form. Its a formality and so long as you havent done anything that would otherwise bar you from possessing a firearm (felonies etc) you'll get a call back from the FFL saying your all clear.
Owning a handgun in NY state is a little more complicated, since NY is a 'may issue state', and every county has its own rules and procedures, i.e. Westchester county only issues restricted permits, and Sullivan co issues CCW and restricted but only to voters: read citizen. You must meet with a judge usually and go through a lengthy application process, aquire character references, be fingerprinted and background checked etc.

I know here in gun loving Oregon (outside of the Portland metro anyway) that you can buy plenty of guns if your a PR, however you CANNOT get a CCW permit.
So as long as you dont plan on walking around strapped with a pistol, you can buy all the guns you like.

Lets start with Caliber....
I'm looking at a 9mm - Mainly due to the ammo costs.

Re: Can I buy a gun?
my dream is the 9mm Kimber ultra, 1911 style, $1300 price tag though.
Think I'll end up with the Springfield Armories XDM9 - Shoot a XD9 sub-compact 3" atthe range - even my 13 y/o can control the recoil and stay on target.

Re: Can I buy a gun?
If you want a sub-compact get the Glock 26, I tried one at the weekend it's unbelievably good and shoots better than my 9mm USP.
