Calling home (yes, the UK is still "home")
What is the best long distance plan for calling the UK? It is for my daughter to call her grandparents, so I don't want to be messing around with pc/internet based services.
Just a number she call dial, key in a pin and then dial the UK.

This is the 1 I use every time I call my family back in the U.K

It's really good, and it lasts for a long time.

I use 10-10-9-8-7 it costs 4 cents a minute, plus a 53 cents connection charge. So for just over $2 you can talk for 1 hour. The charges will be listed on your regular phone bill.

It has gone up to 4c/minute, but still well worth it.

Oh sod this, I'd better edit my post.
Its so cheap I've not even noticed the price change.
We too have been using it for years with no problems at all.

I know you said you didn't want to be pissing about with internet type services, but seriously, there is no pissing to be done with Lingo. If you have cable internet, simply plug your box into your modem, and your normal, cordless handset(s) into the Lingo box instead of your wall phone jack. Thats it. Don't matter if your computer is on or off, whatever. So long as you have power to your house just use like a normal phone. $20 a month unlimited to US, Canada, and Western Europe.
I've had more pissing about with Verizon than I have with Lingo.

I'm thinking of using Skype internet phone. You can't really beat free skype to skype or 2.1c a min, no tax and no connection charge. As an extra, $40 a year for a phone number anywhere in the world is a pretty good deal as well. Yeah it's via your computer but it seems a helluva deal!

When i call home, i generally pick up a $10 "Global direct"" world phone card from bp. I think it is done by IDT. I usually get about 4hrs to a land line from a $10 card, so pretty much worth it and they usually last me a while (unless i have to call a mobile, then u get completely ripped off).

Hiya ;-)
My hubby and I use the following to call the UK. The beauty is that there is no silly maintenance fee, just a flat rate of 1.9 cents per minute!

Charge: 1.9c/min
Card type: Bizon
