not sure what you mean about the SAVE system.

here is my timeline.

I arrived Fri 6th Jan.

Applied for SSN Mon 9th Jan in person at office in Hollywood.
Recieved SSN number at the same office on 12th Jan - they printed it out for me.

Received SSN Card on 18th Jan

Have not encounted any problems....

You were lucky. It happens for some, but for most it doesn't.

What happens is, you enter country, your details get entered into the system within the week and the social office basically check you against that to see if you're eligible for the number.

When you don't pop up, they usually just stick you in manual verification, that can take up to 6 weeks.

What happens if you are lucky and not in a busy office, the person doesn't actually stick you into the system, but checks back every day to see that you are in SAVE, then applies for your number, which you get very quickly and can then get from the office.

Google is your friend... and your blanket statement about not waiting is more likely to hurt people rather than help them. Once you understand more about the SAVE system, you'll discover why. As Bob says, you were lucky.

I spoke to my visa company and they agreed that I should wait to be placed into the SAVE system.

I have my embassy interview tommorrow! So I'll be busy preparing for that! I'll report back afterwards and let you know how it went!

Thanks to all of you for your input

Wish me luck!

So... I got accepted!!

I'll be training for 18 months in California (3 months in orange county/ l.a. area and the rest, hopefully, in san francisco!)

I had to wait about 5-6 hours and the interview process was about 1 minute! I thought it would be lot more intense and questioning but it was fine!

I may also have found somewhere to live, spoken to a guy and he seems very personable (i've checked him out on LinkedIn) and the house is only 10 minutes from my work! And that's 10 minutes WALK!!

So that puts my necessity for a car a little bit on the backburner- I think I'll make do, for the first few weeks anyway, with ZipCar at the weekends.

Thanks for your help, i'll start another thread as there one has become reasonably car focused.

Cheers to all!
