Not that North/South snobbery. I feel like I'm in a parallel reverse UK

On the plus side, the missus can apply for an EAD to allow work...though might want the company to stump for it as it has to be renewed annually and it ain't that cheap. Children won't be able to get an EAD though, so that can be tough if they are teenagers.

Having been raised in Lancashire, lived in London, and now living in the SF Bay Area, I'd say there is a difference - in the UK, there is a tremendous snobbery 'against' the north. But here, I'd say there is more of a casual "lifestyle rivalry" - smog vs. fog, Giants vs. Dodgers, Silicon vs. Silicone, etc. But in the UK, oh my ... the folks in the South think that folks from 'up north' still live in mud huts!

Comida mexicana, South San Jose, California. Taquerias in San Jose rock the free world!

Those tacos may not look all that appealing, but they tasted great!

Oh no, you're frightful northerner!:)

Being a decent southern Sussex type myself, whilst not exactly mud huts, I was taken aback a little at the back-to-back houses in Leeds when I moved up there in the 80's - I mean, where does one put the swimming pool?

Re: California

Hi I wonder if anybody could help us. We are a married couple, both 25 years old and living in Kent. I commute into London and work for an investment bank and my husband is currently temping and doing a part time carpentry course.

We have been to california several times and would like to try life out there. Neither of us have friends here and we don't get on with our families and feel that we need a change from England. We both love California in particular Santa Monica and San Francisco.

Is it possible for us to relocate to California? The visa process all sounds very confusing and difficult. Can anyone advise?

Santa Monica and San Francisco are on a par with London as far as cost of living and housing.
You have little chance of getting a visa. Hubby could probably find illegal carpentry work amongst the British community. You could do bookkeeping or be a nanny, also illegally. That's about it really

Thanks for your reply.

I work for a global investment bank and there are a few offices based in California. I was wondering if it would be worth asking for a transfer? My colleague in London traves a lot to the office in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Maybe I should bide my time, stick it out for a bit longer and try for a transfer, either that or Australia it is. We need to get away from England, we have moved further away but it just isn'tfar enough from the problem families that we have. We have a lot of trouble from both of our families and we really need to get away from this country, plus I am sick of paying for the 16 year old girls with their 10 kids and their council flats - sounds bitter I know :-)

No Problem. I guess that depends on your companies prospects, rules, opportunities at CA branches etc. CA and the USA is not without it's share of crime, social problems, traffic, taxes etc. That's life. As someone on here appropriately put it, same shit, different bucket. In this case it's a sunnier bucket............... even that get's old
