Default Calif. driver's license for F-1

Hello, For a F-1 student, is it difficult to get a California driver's license? How
about a Social Security Number?

Thanks.

Rob.

As long as you have a legal status in the United States you can get both. In some
cases you do not need a Social Security number, but you can still apply for a
driverslicense.

You will have to do a written test and a driving test. The actual driving license
will not arrive till 5 to 12 months. You will get a temporary license though that you
need to extend every 3 months.

I did my exam roughly 2 months ago, and have not received my plastic card yet. You'd
be surprised how many store owners think your green card is not a real ID. Annoying
Can't wait till my driving license arrives... i got the green card in three weeks.

I know there are a couple of sites about driving licenes
(I'll be arriving from UK)
But I can't find anything specific regarding Virginia, I know the
laws vary in each state.
I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
Thank you.

Hi Roger,

You can find the web site for Virginia DMV at:

In

That's no longer true. Unless you have a visa that allows you to legally work in the
US, the SSA no longer isues a SSN to non-residents. It is a new law that started at
the beginning of March.
