Cali holiday for one
Hubby has a course in Orange County, the hotel is paid for so I'm thinking of joining him for a few days hiring a car and taking off to explore while he learns about another interesting new printer/copier woohooo !
So whos in south Cali ? I need ideas of things to do and places to visit that are safe for a lil old English lady.

Newport Beach area; Laguna beach; San Diego; Santa Barbara/wine country of Paso Robles too far?; museums and Disney Concert Hall in LA; Getty Museum and Getty Villa in LA; Old Queen Mary Liner in LA; Mission of San Juan Capistrano (try the restaurant in the Station); Dana Point; San Clemente beach area; Santa Monica Pier and town; boat trip to Catalina Island; Pasadena in LA;
If I think of any more I'll let you know.

Jan if you are looking to perhaps hook up with some of the Brits who live in that area, try asking on the Meetup forum in the US section. I know there are many Brits in California, ie Poppygirl, Mummyinthefoothills, Sambapink, etc.

They're all pretty far north from Orange County though.

I'm in OC ... the beaches previously listed are nice.
Queen Mary is close by in Long Beach - about 35 miles away.
The Mission in Capistrano shouldn't be too difficult to get to from Newport (I think that's where you said you were staying).
There's a meet-up group on Facebook - So Cal British Expats. I've been to a couple of their meet-ups, and generally they get a good turn out.

I'd say the traffic on I-5 will be a bit of a shock coming from Alaska, head to the beach!

Depending on where you are in OC you can catch the train down the coast and hop off in San Juan, O-Side, Carlsbad etc . etc.

Sigh. "Cali" is a city in Colombia. If you mean California, by all means use "CA," "Cal," "Calif" -- those are commonly used abbreviations.
That said, I agree that Long Beach is nice. Last September went whale watching out of LB. [I don't think it is in season now]. South to San Diego is nice. Agree about looking into Amtrak.

Don't think the traffic will be a problem, I'm not [I]from[I] Alaska I just live here. Just been looking at bike rentals, Harley are pretty reasonable thinking they might be worth a call.
