CA Bay Area/South Bay housing
We have to move from our lovely San Jose home, oh the joys of renting.
Other than Evergreen and Almaden, are there any other nice areas of San Jose to live? Does anyone live in Milpitas (convenient for work)? Is that area nice?
Any recommendations very much appreciated.

Generally the houses are larger and cheaper than south San Jose but the area I pointed out is the most expensive area. Expect to find some very large multimillion homes in the area and explore areas off those main roads.
Fremont is made up of 5 townships (Mission San Jose - the old Spanish Mission district, Warm Springs, Niles - where the Charlie Chaplin and silent western films were made, Irvington, and Centerville) that incorporated into Fremont in 1956.
Fremont is overall very well maintained with well maintained streets and mostly underground utilities. The main drawback is that it doesn't have a very strong center where people congregate but instead many smaller centers. Irvington has the largest center (area between Fremont Blvd and Paseo Padre and Mowery avenue and Stevenson Blvd) and also contains Lake Elizabeth as well as the BART station.
As far as Milpitas, the only area I like is towards the hills but you may find some reasonable prices in Milpitas but probably not as cheap as Fremont for the same size home and area and Milpitas overall feels too suburban where a significant part of Fremont feels less suburban.

Thanks. We looked at Fremont and the houses are really lovely, however it's further North than we wanted to go. We're really hoping to find something in Milpitas or one of the better areas of San Jose... it's just knowing where they are!

You might want to check out the Almaden Valley area or Campbell. If you have kids, the Alamadan Valley area has pretty high ranked schools but Campbell doesn't have very high ranking schools. Milpitas is ranked above average for it's schools but overall below the Evergreen area.
