Buying/starting a business

If you wants to invest in the US, does you have to buy an existing business or can you start from scratch? Also, how much are you expected to invest?

Please excuse the grammar, I changed 'one' to 'you' without checking that it agreed with the rest of the sentence.

You need to invest at least $100,000 ... what you are looking for is an E
class visa.

Taking your question literally, the answer is: you can invest in whatever you want.
But since this is an immigration newsgroup, you are probably asking about which
investment would have immigration consequences.

This is a tricky field, and you should definitely hire a lawyer.

You can either get an E non-immigrant visa, or an investment-based Green Card. For
the latter, you will need an investment of one million $. This Green Card is intended
for newly formed businesses, although I have heard that there are ways you can also
get it through an existing company.

Again, hire a lawyer experienced with investment-based immigration.

In most instances for the smaller investment amounts, the number of Americans you would hire is a crucial factor (as well as a viable business plan, startup money, experience, etc.).

That is, there are a lot more factors involved than just money (unless it is a lot of money).
