I can't believe that anyone would get used to that smell Couldn't ever work in those places, your hair, clothes and everything must stink like that constantly!

Romford always smelled strongly of hops from the local brewery. Not really unpleasant but I wouldn't fancy it all the time.

I au-paired in Brussels during my gap year and lived not far from the Cote D'or factory. Loved the chocolate when I got there, couldn't stand it by the time I left 8 months later. The smell was absolutely gross - never eaten it since.
Now if it had been a Cadbury's factory - may have been a different matter

I pass a Jim Beam factory on my way home from work sometimes ... envision a sickingly sweet odor mixed with traffic. Blech!

To the OP, unless you've got 60% to put down, you'll have to jump through hoops to get a mortgage and it'll still be rubbish and you've got all the other hassles of not having any credit history.
Rent, makes it much easier to bail if you realise the area is boring, smells or is just plain kack under the surface....and selling a home is much more expensive over here than in the UK.

just keep an eye on closing costs in the future.... it is anticipated that banks are going to increase their closing costs - (probably because they aren't making as much money on the interest as they once did.. so whack peeps upfront with charges)..
September, I think FHA's mortgage insurance premium is going up.
Still, be interesting to see how this flies -

We re-financed last year and got 15yr at 4.5%....... it was soooo worth having a look around and seeing what else was available.
Just before the paperwork all got signed off the rates were starting back up again and the bank tried to stall and force us past the cut off date so they could put the rate up - luckily our mortgage advisor was one step ahead of them!!!

Lisa > Agreed...FL is pretty awful for property prices...what I think may be best is as suggested, rent in the short term, in particular until you have a better idea about a) area and b) green card...unless of course you put a lot of effort in upfront to make sure the area you buy in is one you want to stay in long term...but...on the flipside...with properties cheap, so many foreclosures it is certainly a buyers market if you can secure the loan...maybe it is the right time to invest...
A lot of folks are renting out their house but not paying their mortgage in these desperate times. Should you have large deposits down for the rental and the bank repossesses, the chances of getting anything back are minimal. Just something to be aware of.

Just one, late heads-up on renting:
