Talking Buying Meat in South Florida!

Hey,

I'm moving to Fort Lauderdale in June and I'm just wondering how you guys go about buying your meat?

I'm a large, rugby player and I eat a lot of meat so currently I order my meat in bulk from a website in the UK and get beef mince (chuck?) and chicken breast at a fairly good price and it's all fresh. It's £25 for 5kg of chicken breast so that's around $40 for 11lb of chicken breast.

Is there anything similar available in the South Florida area? If not online, are there shops where you can buy meat in bulk?

I will get rice, veg etc from a supermarket (I think there's a "Winn-Dixie" a few minutes from the apartment?) but meat tends to be expensive from the supermarkets, hence this thread.

Thank you in advance!

funny enough we find some of the best meat comes from sams club (similar to Bookers) which is owned by walmart, we buy steak and fish from there.

walmart actually does pretty good mince..there are various degrees of fat content from lardy yank up to very lean

Chicken is one thing you will absolutely love, its so good here and the pieces are huge.

of the two supermarkets Winn Dixie is more sainsburys level, we generally don't buy much from there and definitely not meat. Publix is a bit more higher end and the meat isn't bad.

also look for Trader Joes and Whole foods for nicer organic stuff (pricey though)

don't expect decent salad or fruit....you are lucky if it lasts 3 days before its off.

veggies, we use a local small produce store (fruit and veg shop) which has better quality and better prices than the supermarkets..

be prepared to shop more often............and don't be surprised if you spend more than you thought you would

You could also look into CSAs where you buy a share of an animal directly from the farmer. May be pricey and you will need a new freezers but will be quality.

I'm sure I'm not the only one curious about where you will be playing.

We get chicken breast from our local "high end" supermarket (at the Sainbury's end of the market, and going head-to-head with Publix which is currently invading their turf), which they sell at $2/lb, and have done for a number of months. For some reason they are undercutting even Walmart, I presume as a loss-leader, ..... because they certainly make it up on most of the packaged groceries!

What is the name of that supermarket?

Thanks for all the replies so far, very helpful. Animal share won't be feasible as I will only have one freezer but it's a cool idea. Maybe one day!

Land & Sea Market is pretty good. Win Dixie, isnt to bad, or at least the one we go to (up until a few weeks ago it was a Sweetbay). Publix is good.

i have found its pretty hard not to get good meat here. But price does vary. It will also vary by neighborhood in terms of price. Do a bit of research, check out your local supermarkets, as well as specialist stores and you will end up finding a place that meets your needs.

Assuming you were responding to my post (tip: use the quote" function, then we'll know who's post you are referring to), it's local to the Carolinas, with locations in VA and as far north as DC, but very few in Georgia, and only a single location in Florida, and that one is only just south of the Georgia state line.
