Still, there's also a whole camp of Americans here who do resist, some actively. Unlike Madonna, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who spends a lot of time in London, so far hasn't been overheard mimicking her boyfriend, singer Chris Martin, of the British rock band Coldplay.
Thanks for posting that very interesting article. Which brings me to a question about Gwyneth Paltrow who played a stuffy English professor in A.S. Byatt's "Possession" and obviously adopting a non-American accent for the part. I wondered how convincing the accent was? She was also in Jane Austen's "Emma" playing the title role of a young English woman of the 18th century.
Rene Zellweger, on the other hand was, I thought, pretty convincing in "Bridget Jones' Diary". However, that's my opinion. Colin Firth has remarked that after a time of being with Rene on the set, it was easy to forget that she was American. I just wondered what you guys might think?

The first movie I ever saw of hers was Sliding Doors, in which she also had an English accent. It was very good, I didn't know much about GP at the time and didn't find out she was American 'til a good while later.

Thanks for the heads up I like Paltrow as an actress and am an admirer of her sense of style. She would have made a great model if she hadn't become an actress.
Much to be said for the speech trainers on a movie set, I suppose.

Yes; I'm with you on this one. I tell them I speak English, not Ameriglish.

I absolutely HATE this... "American English". Further more, I don't even consider it a category!
