The British Pub vs. The US Bar
Hi folks,
I'll be moving to NYC in the next 18 months or so, one of the things i'll miss is my local pub to relax and socialize. Do you guys find that you can still do the same in a bar over there or is it that different?

Re: The British Pub vs. The US Bar
In general, American bars are a lot different to British pubs. Even Irish themed pubs aren't remotely like British pubs either.
Then there's the whole tipping the bartender issue that is so American.

There is no comparison. You have two entirely different countries with different cultures and patterns of socialization. I'm only talking from my viewpoint here but I don't think that Americans use pubs/bars for the type of socializing you are thinking. They are used as sources for networking and picking up dates. Local bars/pubs might well be used by neighbor men as a watering hole .. a term once used to call a bar ... where men would get together to watch the game and hoist a few.
NCP made mention of Irish "theme" pubs. I don't know if they are "themed" up in my neighborhood but all 11 of the pubs in a seven block area are owned, managed and staffed by Irish men and women. Each have a list of soccer games that will be viewed on their doors and windows and you will rarely see an American game screened. I watched Rugby the other weekend in our Irish pub while there for dinner.

Re: The British Pub vs. The US Bar
Pros - there are plenty of bars that have a much greater selection of beer than would ever be found in any UK pub thanks to the proliferation of U.S. microbrweries.
Cons - only 500 or so bars in the whole of the U.S. have Real (a.k.a. cask-conditioned) Ale, and even then some of those only have one firkin every second Tuersday that runs out by 9.30pm.

Any idea where in NYC you'll be living? I can give you a better clue based on that information.
