Default British Passport Renewal

I've done some searching online but can't find any details.
I was wondering:

I'm in the US of A - permanent resident with 10 year green card.
My passport expires in 2009
Could I mail my passport and the completed forms to a family member in the UK, have them send in the old passport, forms and payment and then once the passport is returned to them....they ship it back to me here in the US?

I know I can get it renewed via the consulate service here in the US, but can it be done the way I described above?
I've read nothing about it being illegal or against the rules, but I didn't find anywhere saying it was ok either.

Thoughts?

I think the answer is 'No'.

Part of the declaration that you have to sign at the end of the application form says "I am in the country of application". So thechnically you'd be lying on a passport application form. Don't know what the penalties for that are....
