Sorry to flog the horse and revive this thread, but I'm confused about something on the passport application.

First, the form asks for information about my father's British passport, if he has one. If he does have one and I intentionally leave this blank, could this cause problems? I could ask him for this information but I don't know how he could tell me his passport number securely (email is a terrible idea).

And the passport form asks for the date and place of my parent's marriage, which is fine. However, in the passport documents listed on this page (http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/help-fo...port-documents), I need to submit these:

# a marriage declaration (pdf) completed by your parents and
# divorce documents (if applicable)

My parents divorced in 1990 and thus can't fill out the marriage declaration, but I can submit documents of their divorce. So can I ignore the marriage declaration form too?

I would do all of this without asking but reading these things gives me the impression that citizenship through someone's father requires marriage whereas citizenship through one's mother does not. Since they're currently not married, does this bar me from citizenship?

Thanks in advance.

Father doesn't need to hold a British passport for you to claim British citizenship.

What you need to show is evidence that:
- father was born in Britain (or otherwise British "otherwise than by descent"); and
- father was married to mother.
