Arguably, San Diego has it all. It is near the sea, near the desert, warm temps all year around, even near the snow if you want to ski (2 hours will usually get you there in winter/spring). However, as with all things it really is personal choice. You will definitely not experience seasons and ‘green’ is a color reserved for golf courses and those few weeks when the hillsides do partially green up due to the limited rainfall. Everyday living as with anywhere comes with the normal trials and tribulations. There is no doubt that So. CA is expensive living to say otherwise is to be, frankly deluded. That is the price people pay. The lifestyle is outdoorsy for the most part but quite frenetic. Thinks definitely move fast here. 8 lane motorways anyone?

Most people live as close to the ocean as they can afford or alternatively post code (zipcode) shop for the best school districts. Hence, a number of sanitized neighborhoods exist inland north east of San Diego from Tierra Santa, Scripps Ranch, Poway, Rancho Bernardo which is where people strive to live and bring up their children. Living south of the city is fine but more a patchwork of areas you would want to live. It used to be quite cheaper but now the prices have rocketed. Its still not as desirable in all ways - to live, work, school etc as North of the city but can be done if you pick your areas well. Most of the good areas are dictated by as you might imagine house price.
  1. What was the most difficult part of the transition from UK to US living?
Any which way it is a different culture here. Surprisingly there are country folk even in San Diego we call the area Clan Tee (Santee). This society is not as paternalistic as the UK in my humble opinion. Freedom bring s personal responsibility and I found that can be a challenge coming from the UK and requires adjustment.

2. If you moved with children to San Diego, which neighbourhood did you settle in?

No question - Rancho Bernardo, Poway or Scripps in that order.

3. What do you miss most about the UK?

Greenery, culture, old buildings, relatives.

4. What do you enjoy most about living in SD/SoCal?

Weather and outdoor lifestyle.
