Re: British accents
I have never heard this term "chav" before what does it mean ? I have seen it on this site but nowhere else. That aside I am from Hertfordshire so I don't actually have an accent of any kind I just speak normally. It is pretty interesting though in the USA because I used to think the yanks all sounded the same but now I know and loathe accents from maine, ND, and Louisiana whereas I don't mind accents from say Florida.

Re: British accents
Ok I saw that link so chavs are basically Essex people right ? We used to get some of those crossing the border into Herts from Harlow. They were of low breeding and looked similar to the people in the link you posted. What does teh actual term mean ? I have been away for 7 years ? I assume chav is short for smoething.

Re: British accents
I've got a really strong Geordie accent, and it's not easy living in Brooklyn.
I get the usual "Oh, I love your accent, but what the hell did you just say"?
I sound like a mix of Geordie, Scottish, and whatever else you might think you hear when I talk.
I've even had people ask me if I'm from France! and one even thought I was Australian!!! the mind boggles.
I have a bad fear of talking on the phone over here, as I have to repeat myself 3 or 4 times before they finally get what I'm saying. It can make me depressed some times, but I'm never going to change the way I talk. I try my best, but it's still not good enough.

Re: British accents
One of the first things I overheard after moving to London 8 years ago was some kid at a bus stop say " Do Wot ? I ced, - I aint got go faarkin' akcent ! ".
In fear of loosing mine and having the proper pi55 taken back home I've started conciously using the word Geezer as much as possible.. it's impossible to say it without using a London accent !

I speak to a lot of people on the phone every day and at least 4 or 5 times a day someone says "OOooo I love your accent, I could listen to you all day". It gets boring by the 700th time, especially when they say "Is it Australian/ Welsh/ Irish?" but at least it gets me remembered!
It does me well though when I am trying to sound authorative!
My best mate from Birmingham came over a few years ago. She has the strongest Brummie accent ever and someone said "I love your accent....." She was ROFL & said in her whole life, no-one ever said that before.
What I LOVE about British accents is the enormous variety that you just don't get here. Oh I know, someone from Alabama sounds totally different from someone in New Joisey, but they are a continent apart. Back home, you go 50 miles and they sound totally different.

Apologies if already posted somewhere - a lot of the same things that come up on here are mentioned in this article so thought it might be interesting if you haven't seen it yet:

I find that the Americans adore the English accent, its ever so funny to hear them repeat "B*gger me" or S*d Off:lol
Such a joy to hear my American friends speak Cockney rhyming slang, bottle and glass, lol
