"For new hires, employee orientation is a one-time event that welcomes new employees to your company. It's more general in focus. Conversely, employee onboarding is a series of events and trainings (including orientation) that helps new hires progress into successful employees. It's more job- and department-specific."

Because that's how English works, and has done since before modern English existed.

Not in the US it doesn't. If you read Bill Byson's History of the English Language US English is nearer to that spoken at the time of the Pilgrim Fathers then UK English, and I bet they were not onboarded on arrival at Plymouth Rock.

My reaction exactly other than a slight age difference (I’m 72). If anything, I might use the term intake. Also, coming “on board” was used in the military, but not civilian employment.

The company I work for, a fairly large US Bank, started using the phrase a couple of years ago. It is used for new employees as well as new customers/clients.

I meant it evolves, continuously adopting new words and new uses for existing words, and sometimes the original uses declines or ceases entirely. This is why modern English is very different from Shakespeare's, and old English is barely understandable today.

To me they will always be bin men though I guess in todays world and using correct PC terminology they are commonly known as refuse collectors, waste management disposal, sanitary engineers, garbage disposal professionals or whatever else we refer to them as.

The correct name is neither of these- it's dustmen.

Guess someone will invent offloaded for sacked. No doubt that someone will have a degree in media studies, have been a manager in ASDA and is now a direct entry Superintendent in the police. They will have been bloody useless at everything except writing new words that mean bugger all. But all the other twits from a similar background will be impressed
