Default Bringing her cat to the U.S.

My fiancee will be coming to the U.S. from Novosibirsk, Russia... Who do I
call (or what needs to be done) to find out what we need to do to bring her
cat to the U.S.?? BTW we are going on the 12th week of waiting for her
interview date at the embassy.

Thanks!
-Doug

Call up the consulate. The cat will require a vet check less than 48 hours before it flies (this is a requirement of the airlines). There is a fee for animals travelling by plane, whether in the cabin (in a crate, under the seat) or as baggage (in heated/pressurized cargo). It may not be allowed in the cabin if it is too large and doesn't fit in a carrier that fits under a seat. It cannot be let out during the flight - because of this, and because the flight is so long, you may wish to consider flying the cat as baggage, in a larger crate, to avoid extra stress.

If crated and as baggage, the animal must be in a carrier that is approved by the airlines. You must tape instructions for feeding, along with food and medications if necessary, to the outside of the crate. There must be stickers on at least three sides and the top marking "This way up" and "Live Animal" on the crate. There must be fresh water provided inside the crate. I recommend toys and comforting things like blankets to keep your pet happy. You should check with the airline as well.

(Who ships and travels with service dogs all the time - some which sometimes travel as baggage.)

Hi,

I know it is probably different bringing a cat from Russia, but here is a thread detailing Patrick's recent experiences of taking his cat from the UK to the US.

There are some useful links in the posting by Thing2 that follows Patrick's.

Don't know about the cat question, but my wife is from Novosibirsk
She used to work for Sun Microsystems there.

Doug,
You need to check with the airline about arrangements for the cat, too.

Indeedy, check your chosen airline accepts transport of pets (not all do - e.g. Virgin Airlines) and give them as much notice as possible to book the pet onto the flight. I'm going to be travelling with NWA who have a section on their website about pet transport : http://www.nwa.com/travel/tips/pets.shtml Other airlines that carry pets should have a similar section
