Bringing food

Hi, I want to bring some uk foods we love that i know can be hard to get there, whqt are the restrictions this is what I want to bring. We are moving to Jacksonville NC so if I've listed anything that is now available anywhere.please let me know so I can save some space.

Oxtail soup (I'm concerned because it's meat)
Marmite (we are a love it house)
Branston pickle
Suet (for dumplins)
Bisto gravy
Oxo cubes
PG tips!

I'm sure ill find more between now and July! What foods do you miss?

Re: Bringing food

You can certainly bring vegetarian suet, beef suet will probably get confiscated. Maybe look on Amazon.com and see what can be delivered to a US address. Looking on Amazon, it looks like you can buy beef suet for $6 a box
Bisto and Branston you can buy in a lot of grocery stores, PG tips are sold in many Asian food stores.

Marmite is sold in our grocery store in the baking section for some strange reason.

I'm pretty sure anything containing beef products from the U.K. is still banned.

Beef and any beef products/ derivatives are banned, and some other meats and meat products are too, so generally I avoid bring anything with meat in it because of the attraction it tends to generate with US customs.

PG Tips is widely available in groceries, it's not even the international/ British section.

Re: Bringing food

If it helps at all, beef Bisto doesn't contain any beef. It's vegan, apparently! I don't believe the same can be said for all the other flavours.

Edit: To clarify, I'm referring to the one in the red pot. I've just had a Google, and it seems as though this one is now considered 'favourite' flavour.

(It's beef, though.)

I haven't seen Oxtail Soup, suet or Oxo cubes but the rest have been in grocery stores....some a little higher priced but not too crazy! Except for Salad Cream :( That seems to be $8 which I can't bring myself to pay lol....maybe if I really really miss it.

PG Tips are easy to find here too, at least in our neck of the woods.

I believe the ban on beef imports from the UK has actually been lifted at a comercial level, but for individual travellers CBP generally don't allow any meat imports from anywhere.

Not only is most meat still banned for import by individuals, the US landing card actually asks if you have visited a farm while outside the US as there are common animal diseases that could easily be inadvertently brought back into the US, such as foot and mouth disease.

I do like the way they specifically mention that Marmite and Vegemite are ok!

Re: Bringing food

You will need to learn how to make the following as they don't stay fresh for long:
Sausage Rolls
Crumpets
Yorkshire Puddings

You won't find these anywhere:
Prawn Cocktail crisps
Salt and Vinegar crisps
Cheese and Onion crisps
Dairy Milk (or any variations)
After 8s
Custard Creams or Bourbon Creams
Digestives or Chocolate Digestives
Mushy Peas
Twiglets
Dandelion and Burdock
Fizzy Lemonade
Custard
Orange squash/Ribena/etc - it comes in a more expensive and less tasty powdered form
Horlicks

Bring a long term supply of these for the sake of your wallet.
Multi-Vitamins
Antihistamines
Virtually any other health related capsule
Bonjela - this isn't expensive like the above, it just isn't available anywhere and you have to import from the UK at stupid prices.

I'll come back if I think of any more :P

What a weird list!

For starters, Lays make S&V crisps, so they are likely available in any grocery. The main chains near me, including Walmart, all sell them.

Digestives, Chocolate Digestives, and even Hobnobs are staples of the British section of a grocery that has an International aisle. I am 90% certain I have see Mushy peas in the British section too.

What is special/ different about British multivitamins? Taking vitamins seems to be a national obsession in the US, not only with groceries and pharmacies sell a bewildering range, but there is a chain (GNC) that sells only nutritional supplements.

You can buy antihistamines too - we have a bottle of an antihistamine syrup, US brand, bought in the US.

Why would anyone not make Yorkshire puds from scratch anyway? Premade Yorkshire puds are an abomination! :frown:

Re: Bringing food

I agree with most of that list. I bought Sea salt and malt vinegar crisps last week. They come in huge packs though.
You can buy Ovaltine quite easily, if that is a substitute for Horlicks.
Ribena is quite easy to find, but it's over $10 a bottle.
They sell crumpets in Trader Joes and some other stores.
Instant custard is hard to find, but Birds custard that you make with milk is fairly easy to get.
Dairy Milk is sold in many stores around here.
The Jo-Jos in Trader Joes are very similar to custard creams.
