Booking honeymoon
 

We're entering the US on June 16th and getting married on July 5th. The honeymoon will probably be delayed until around July 20th.

We're tentatively planning on a road trip to New York & New England (Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard). Would it be cheaper to get hotels booked now from the UK using our UK card or wait until we're in the US? Obviously, the longer we leave it, the harder hotel rooms will be to come by, relatively speaking.

Before you book for Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard in July, make sure you can get a ferry reservation -- it's prone to be extremely busy.

My advice is to book now, and make sure you know their cancellation policy, just in case you can't make that reservation date.

The ferry from Quonset, RI to the Vineyard is a little less well known and so doesn't always fill up so fast.

Last time we went to the Vineyard we stayed at a B&B called Marni's House. Highly recommended.

I used to live on cape cod. My advice is to book now, definitely, and don't expect to find any good deals.

+1 for the booking now for the islands and the Cape. Watch out for cancelation policies, minimum stays etc. Reasonable places to stay will be expensive, and many rooms will have sold out months ago. Many people make annual vacations to these places and book next year's holiday just after returning from the vacation before. That said, if you're flexible you should find places - just try to lock them in ASAP (and watch for ferry ressies as previously stated).

Cars can be more of a hindrance than a help on the islands, so maybe consider leaving it at the port, saving money by being foot passengers and then hiring bikes on the island. Can be quite a pleasant way to do things.

Wow, accommodation on Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket is a bit pricey!

Plan B; fly to San Diego for a few days then a road trip up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco for another few days before flying back. We'll make a few stops along the way, possibly Santa Barbara and Monterey. We're aiming for around 14 days all told.

Looks affordable and we're hoping to have it all booked-up by the end of the weekend.

Any suggestions for 'must-see' sights or places to avoid along the way would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations and yes, I think your Plan B is a very good one. You'll have a blast.

Don't stop at San Francisco -- keep going over the Golden Gate and just a little further north. Spend a day or two enjoying the wine country (Napa et al).

As for places to avoid on the way: Los Angeles :-)

I agree, that's a beautiful coastal drive.

See, I would have said just the opposite. I love San Francisco...can't stand the wine country up north. The scenery is nice for a drive through, but no reason to stay there, as far as I'm concerned. There's a lot more to do in SF.

I agree about driving straight through LA, unless you want spend one day going to the beach or seeing Hollywood (couple of hours is all that takes).

Hubby and I stayed in a nice B&B in San Luis Obispo (north of LA) once.

If you're in San Diego, go to La Jolla. It's got a beautiful walkway along the oceanside.

We'll have to disagree on the wine country but I will say there are some really super-nice places to stay there. Not cheap though.

I do agree the scenery around San Luis Obispo is terrific.

And San Diego is a wonderful city to visit. La Jolla is great and see downtown, the Old Town, Balboa Park and more. Seaworld is a fun day also.

And if you like theme parks and the like, there's Disneyland/Anaheim and Universal Studios/Hollywood as you drive through Los Angeles.

All those theme parks are quite pricey but if you like those places, look for online deals for advance purchase tickets to save some dosh.
