Booking direct or though agents?

Booking direct or though agents?
So I've been checking out flight prices and times, and it looks like Icelandair is best considering price and flight time (even though I have to pay extra for food on the international flight - any other issues with this airline?).
Does it make any difference if I book directly through the airline or via something else like Orbitz or travelocity? Do I have more/fewer rights if something goes wrong. My dad claimed that icelandair were possibly going into administration but I can't find anything on that on the internet so I'm going to assume he got confused with something else, but it did make me wonder.

Which option is the cheapest. I think it is the same in the US as the UK if you pay by credit card you can claim from the card company. Hopefully if I wrong someone will say.

What are your flight options? Is it worth your while changing in Iceland, as opposed to going non-stop?

I've heard that Icelandair is a nice version of easyJet. Reasonable but don't expect service with frills. And +1 to paying with credit card. If it's cheaper to book with the airline, do so - adding an agency increases the potential for confusion if something goes wrong. But do shop around.

We have flown Icelandair a few times with no issues. Nothing fancy but no worse than say BMI

Best option flying into the UK is landing in the EU, say the Netherlands and then hopping back to the UK from there to save on the taxes.
If you're using a credit card, if the airline dives, poor choice of words perhaps, but you'll get your money back from the credit card company.
A agent, well each have their own clauses and what it usually affects is ability to change flights or what happens if you get a delayed flight and miss a connection etc.
Cindyabs, she might be able to help offer suggestions if you give her a PM

Your dad got mixed up with the similarly named airline, "IcelandAir Express" which was/is a budget airline and used to fly out of EWR (Newark) airport and some Canadian airports. It still appears to be operating!

This is the site for Iceland Air which is a totally different airline and the country's main carrier:
http://www.icelandair.us
http://www.icelandair.us/destinations/ (One can fly via Reykjavik to London, Manchester or Glasgow and have a free stopover in Iceland. I know someone who did this and had a wonderful time in Iceland. My S-i-L who lives in England has also been to Iceland and really enjoyed it there).
The official 'Skytrax' airline quality review for Icelandair is here:
http://www.airlinequality.com/Airlines/FI.htm (It's an official 3 Star airline; the same as American Airlines, United/Continental, Aer Lingus etc.)
Passenger Reviews (most of them are very satisfied with Icelandair):

Hope this helps!

Re: Booking direct or though agents?
The price is the same whether booked through an agency or direct, so I'd book through the one that covers me the most. Got a big enough clearance on my credit card, so I'll make sure I use that.
It looks like orbitz refund money if the price is lower in the end, which seems unlikely but it might be enough to pay for a beer
Thanks everyone.

Got my tickets through Iceland via Orbitz, they cost $600 cheaper for the family than they week before! That's the rental car paid for then.
